Youri Tielemans: Arsenal awaiting Rodgers showdown result with Man Utd circling, as Arteta drops transfer hint

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers alongside Youri Tielemans

The future of Youri Tielemans could hinge on showdown talks with Brendan Rodgers this week, while Mikel Arteta has hinted the incomings at Arsenal are far from over.

The Belgian midfielder, 25, has just 12 months remaining on his current Leicester deal. He has resisted the club’s attempts to tie him down to fresh terms so far, a situation that has heightened the chances of a summer exit.

Indeed, Tielemans is a highly saleable asset and the Foxes are reluctant to lose him for free next summer. But if a contract extension isn’t forthcoming, a sale this summer will be explored.

In that regard, both Arsenal and Manchester United have drawn frequent links.

The Gunners have long been linked with the Belgian and improving their ranks in the engine room is a clear target.

The imminent arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko could remedy that problem. The Man City star plays in midfield for Ukraine and his arrival could be officially confirmed later today.

However, speaking to Arsenal’s website, Mikel Arteta hinted more arrivals are on the agenda. What’s more, his comments regarding drawn-out pursuits could have been referencing long-time target Tielemans.

The Gunners boss said: “We’re in the market to keep improving the squad but there are so many parties involved and sometimes things don’t happen as quickly as you want.”

Man Utd circling, as showdown talks loom

Man Utd, meanwhile, remain deadlocked in their attempts to sign Frenkie de Jong.

If the Dutch superstar won’t budge, Tielemans would represent a more cost-effective like-for-like alternative. Indeed, Tielemans’ contract status means Leicester could be forced to cash in for as little as £25m-£30m.

CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs claimed United’s interest in the Leicester ace is growing. That may be an indication the Red Devils are realising De Jong is out of reach.

Regardless, both United and Arsenal are poised to learn where they stand in the Tielemans race very shortly.

Speaking to the Transfer Talk Podcast, Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth reported Tielemans will hold showdown talks with Brendan Rodgers this week. Pending the outcome, United and Arsenal may be given the greenlight to ramp up their pursuits.

“One player that Arsenal have had a long-term interest in is Youri Tielemans,” said Sheth.

“He has just one year left on his contract and we’ve been told that Tielemans will sit down with Brendan Rodgers this week to discuss his future, so far he’s refused any new deals with Leicester City.

“That is one to watch as we close in on deadline day,”

Tielemans worth the money?

The Belgian was simply superb during his first two-and-a-half years at the King Power.

Indeed, he scooped Leicester’s Player of the Season award in the 2020-21 campaign. His decisive thunderbolt goal to round out that season also helped the Foxes lift their first ever FA Cup.

His performances dipped last year, though he was far from alone at Leicester in that regard.

Tielemans is an accomplished performer that can turn his hand to all aspects of midfield play. He helps to control the tempo while in possession and racks up his fair share of tackles and interceptions on the other end.

He will also contribute plenty of goals and assists from a deeper position and but for his contract status, his true value would be far higher than £25m-£30m.

Precisely why his future is taking so long to unravel isn’t clear. It may be down to Leicester harbouring hope they can convince him to stay. However, if their pleas fall on deaf ears, whichever club pounces are unlikely to regret it.
