Arsenal will continue to put more focus on a transfer for Youri Tielemans despite making an offer for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to reports.
The Gunners have enjoyed an impressive summer window so far, sealing four signings so far. Gabriel Jesus is the latest of those, the striker signing from Manchester City to add goals to Arsenal.
They have also added to their midfield, with former Porto man Fabio Vieira an exciting prospect.
However, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta wants a more senior midfield addition in before the August transfer deadline. The Gunners, led by recruitment chief Edu, have long been in discussions over a move for Leicester’s Tielemans.
Meanwhile, reports from Italy on Tuesday talked of an offer worth as much as £47million for Lazio’s Milinkovic-Savic.
Speaking to the Que Golazo podcast, though, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano insisted that Arsenal have made Tielemans their priority target.
“I see some of these names mentioned,” Romano said. “Milinkovic-Savic is always mentioned in the Italian press, but Lazio want €75-80million (£68.7million) for Milinkovic-Savic, so it is a really complicated one.
“I am sure that Tielemans is a good opportunity because he is out of contract next summer.
“He is not extending his Leicester contract, so this is why Arsenal are exploring that possibility more than Milinkovic-Savic today.”
Belgium international Tielemans insisted during the Nations League fixtures in June that he is in “no rush” to resolve his future.
He added that, if he was to switch clubs this summer, it would have to be for a “great project”.
Arteta is certainly building his team at Arsenal and while there has been some progress, it has perhaps been too little. Indeed, the Gunners narrowly missed out on the Champions League last season.
Tielemans a better Arsenal option than Milinkovic-Savic
Tielemans would be the better option for Arsenal, not only because of the smaller price tag.
The Belgian will reportedly cost up to £30million, with Lazio valuing Milinkovic-Savic much higher.
But at 25, Tielemans is two years younger than Milinkovic-Savic and already has extensive Premier League experience under his belt.
Youri Tielemans will leave Leicester this summer likely for Arsenal
Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans will leave this summer as Arsenal ramp up their interest in Belgium star
And Tielemans is no stranger to a top-four battle either, guiding Leicester close in two successive seasons.
Milinkovic-Savic would therefore be more of a risk and is already approaching his prime. Tielemans, meanwhile, is earlier on in his career and so a long-term contract at Arsenal would suit him better.
