AC Milan make contact with Douglas Luiz to discover Aston Villa demands for midfielder exit

AC Milan appear to be concrete suitors for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz after reportedly making contact with his agent.

Douglas Luiz is entering the final year of his contract with Aston Villa, where he has played since 2019. Across three seasons since his move from Manchester City, he has made more than 100 appearances in total.

However, Aston Villa have strengthened in his position this summer with the arrival of Boubacar Kamara. As such, Steven Gerrard could sanction a sale in the department.

Given his contract situation, Douglas Luiz is a likely casualty. He has long been admired in Italy, where AS Roma have been looking at him as a potential target.

That said, Jose Mourinho’s side have already added Nemanja Matic in defensive midfield. They are also working on a deal for Sassuolo star Davide Frattesi.

Hence, although there could be room for another new face in Mourinho’s midfield, that exit route may be cooling for Douglas Luiz.

But reports have been suggesting an interest from AC Milan in recent days, which would still give him the chance to move to Italy. Furthermore, he would be joining the Serie A champions and getting to play in the Champions League.

Now, according to Milan Live, the Rossoneri have made contact with his agent. They believe they can accommodate his annual salary of €3m, or £50,000 per week.

The obstacle may be Villa’s asking price of €25m (£21.7m), which they feel is too high for a player in the final year of his contract. Hence, they are going to work on reducing it, or structuring the payments in a way that would make use of bonuses or a sell-on clause.

Suitable role waiting for Douglas Luiz if he rises up Milan shortlist

As things stand, Douglas Luiz is merely an alternative target to Renato Sanches for Milan. But Stefano Pioli’s side could miss out on the Lille man to PSG.

Therefore, they are keeping their options open and the 24-year-old would be a good one.

Villa’s price tag is reasonable for a player who has performed well for them over the past few years. He also has the intelligence to be able to adapt to a league like Serie A, one would imagine.

By making a move to Milan, he would be replacing Barcelona-bound Franck Kessie. Therefore, there is a role for him to take and it may be a wise idea to consider for his post-Villa career.
