Villa tipped to beat Liverpool to ‘superb’ Leeds man as Gerrard impact comes into play

Leeds United pair Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha 2021

One pundit reckons Steven Gerrard will help Aston Villa to win the race for ‘superb’ Leeds star Kalvin Phillips, amid interest from several Premier League clubs.

Phillips is a boyhood Leeds fan and will be tough to prize away from Elland Road. However, a transfer could come to fruition if the Whites suffer relegation to the Championship.

Jesse Marsch’s team took a big step away from the drop zone on Sunday by beating Norwich 2-1 at home. They still run the risk of falling behind the likes of Everton and Watford, though, and English rivals are looking to pounce.

Liverpool admire the England international’s ability and could launch a summer move. Arsenal and Newcastle also hold an interest, which could set up a transfer race.

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Villa are firmly in the mix for Phillips’ services, with Gerrard spearheading the pursuit.

He believes 26-year-old Phillips would be a solid addition to the squad as the Villans hunt European qualification over the next few seasons.

Pundit Kevin Phillips thinks his namesake could end up at Villa Park, too. The former striker told Football Insider: “He’s very capable of playing for those big six clubs, there’s no doubt about it.

Kalvin Phillips labelled ‘superb’

“He’s a superb player but he’s struggled with injury this season – which could be a concern for any interested club.

“I think when he’s fully fit, he could slot into any of those top sides, and Leeds United are going to have a real battle on their hands to keep him around.

“The only saving grace is that he loves the club, and you’d think that he would want to help them stay in the Premier League.

Kalvin Phillips in action for Leeds United

“I think they’ll be bids flying in for him. There’s no surprise that Villa with Steven Gerrard are in for him.

“It could be a very tempting move for him. He’d be playing under one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.”

Villa have Philippe Coutinho worry

Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly set to snatch Philippe Coutinho from under Villa’s noses this summer.

Coutinho has four goals and three assists at Villa in just nine appearances. That amounts to a goal contribution every 98.7 minutes since his move to the West Midlands.

Understandably, Gerrard is keen for Villa to take up his signing on a permanent basis. And while Villa have a £33m option on the player, getting a deal done does not look straight forward.

Indeed, the Daily Mirror now claims the Gunners are ready to step in.

And a move to Emirates Stadium looks like it will have more appeal to Coutinho, especially if Arsenal qualify for the Champions League.
