Aston Villa under pressure to sign Boubacar Kamara amid looming transfer battle

Boubacar Kamara on the ball for Marseille

Aston Villa are set to have a heated transfer battle on their hands if they want to sign 22-year-old Boubacar Kamara from Marseille this summer.

Villa are desperate for a holding-midfielder to strengthen the spine of their team next season. They will hope such an addition can help them make further progress up the Premier League table.

The Daily Mail report that Steven Gerrard’s team have held talks with Kamara in regard to a move. They are set to be looking to sign him when he is out-of-contract in the summer.

Douglas Luiz has been a regular feature of the Villa midfield for the majority of the season. The Brazil international has however been rumoured with a move away this summer.

Gerrard has also travelled across the English channel to watch Kamara in action against Nantes in April this year.

The 22-year-old has been in stellar form for Marseille all season averaging a rating of 6.85 in all competitions according to WhoScored.

The Daily Mail have, however, also reported that the French club need to slash their wage bill this summer, which makes a move for Kamara almost certain.

Although by trade Kamara is a defensive-midfielder, he has also been known to play at centre-back or even left back.

Kamara’s versatility would benefit the Villans as it would provide them with much more strength in depth for the upcoming season.

Newcastle to give Boubacar Kamara massive wages this summer

Kamara isn’t the only player Gerrard reportedly wants to bring to his team, however.

Players such as Geoffrey Kondogbia, Yves Bissouma and Kalvin Phillips have also been consistently linked with a move to Villa Park.

Kamara’s potential suitors

Villa aren’t the only team vying for Kamara’s signing this summer however, with Atletico Madrid also reportedly interested.

The former France under-21 international is reportedly also keen on a move to the Premier League. So, Gerrard’s team could be a viable option for him.

Atletico’s Kondogbia has been linked with a move away from Diego Simeone’s team, with a deal to Villa also being discussed.

Since Rodri left for Manchester City in the summer of 2019, Atletico have been loaded with replacements. The sudden rise of Marcos Llorente and arrival of Rodrigo De Paul has meant Kondogbia has had few chances within the first-team.

He could be sacrificed, potentially paving the way for Kamara to join – unless Villa win that battle too.

How Kamara would fit Villa’s system

The midfielder originally started his career as a centre-back but former manager, Andre Villa-Boas deployed him further up the pitch.

This experience of playing in defence will benefit Gerrard’s team. In theory, he will be stronger defensively than Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba.

Kamara’s style of play will also benefit John McGinn’s performance. The Scotland international will be able to play to his strengths more.

One of Kamara’s key strengths is his awareness. The midfielder constantly checks his surroundings which benefits his decision-making.

His awareness also helps in attack from time to time as he knows where to position himself to receive the ball.

Despite only being 5’10 he also plays extremely well aerially, winning around 2 out of 3 duels he attacks.

His traits could fit in well for Villa in the Premier League.
