Steven Gerrard a ‘massive fan’ of Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher, with Aston Villa move gaining momentum
Steven Gerrard is reportedly a ‘massive fan’ of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, with rumours of an Aston Villa move picking up pace.
Gallagher has spent the last two seasons on loan away from Stamford Bridge. During the 2020-21 campaign, he played for West Brom.
The Englishman made 32 appearances for the Baggies, registering two goals and two assists, but couldn’t help them avoid relegation to the Championship.
Last term, Gallagher worked under Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace. He improved in front of goal, finding the net eight times and chipping in with five assists.
Gallagher’s energetic displays in midfield saw him become one of Palace’s best performers. He also broke into the senior England squad. He has reached four caps for Gareth Southgate’s team so far.
The 22-year-old is currently training with the Chelsea first team. Thomas Tuchel is a big fan of his and could decide to keep him in West London ready for next season.
But there is also the possibility of another loan move for Gallagher. This will give him the chance to continue his exciting development without the risk of less game time.
On June 27, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed Gerrard admires Gallagher and would like to work with him at Aston Villa.
Conor Gallagher wanted at Villa Park
And Romano has now reiterated that desire, as cited by CaughtOffside. Gerrard is reportedly a ‘massive fan’ of the box-to-box midfielder, with rumours of a loan move to Villa beginning to grow.
The West Midlands club are yet to begin negotiations with Chelsea over such a transfer. However, talks could begin in the next few weeks if Gerrard informs the Villa board of this transfer wish.
Villa already have strong options in midfield. Gerrard can use Jacob Ramsey, John McGinn and Douglas Luiz there, among others.
Philippe Coutinho can drop into midfield too if required, so bringing in a new player there isn’t a necessity for Gerrard.
However, Gallagher would be a solid capture that falls in line with Villa’s ambitions of making it into the top eight.
The player is already a reliable Premier League performer and his signing would certainly help Villa improve on their 14th-placed finish last season.
Meanwhile, Villa have lost out on a transfer target amid the announcement of his new Liverpool contract.
