EXCLUSIVE: Steven Gerrard puts Ibrox favourite top of his Aston Villa shopping list

Glen Kamara Rangers March 2021

Rangers face a battle to hold onto Glen Kamara this January with Steven Gerrard leading the chase to land his former star, TEAMtalk understands.

Having failed to make the Champions League group stages, the Scottish champions are considering a big sale. A number of players have suitors, but none more than Kamara, who continues to impress in their midfield.

The Finnish international signed a new contract earlier this year, but the 26-year-old does have a price tag. And the hierarchy at Ibrox are well aware of the interest from Aston Villa in the player.

Gerrard is a huge fan of Kamara and always had the idea in mind to take the player with him to Villa Park. And Villa’s need is now apparent after Marvelous Nakamba was ruled out for around four months with a knee problem.

“He’s going to be missing for somewhere in the region of 12 weeks if it is a fantastic rehab. Or it could be up to 16 weeks.

“It will be somewhere in the middle of 12-16 weeks,” said Gerrard.

Gerrard gets transfer green light

The Daily Mirror claim Gerrard has been given “the green light” to draft in a replacement next month.

“In terms of the January window, there’s obviously conversations at Villa. And there always will be behind the scenes identifying areas where we can improve,” said Gerrard.

“If the right person or bodies are there for us to bring in then we’ll certainly look to try and do that. But, obviously, there’s a lot of names being bandied about at the moment which we can’t control that are not true.”

The former Rangers boss is understood to have discussed potential targets with Villa’s sporting director Johan Lange. And Villa co-owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are expected to back the new Villa boss in the January window, despite a £100m spend in the summer.

But Villa are not the only suitors. Everton, Watford, Southampton, Burnley and Newcastle are all keeping close tabs on Kamara.
