Aston Villa have reportedly opened dialogue with West Ham United over the possible loan signing of goalkeeper Darren Randolph this month.
The 34-year-old has been with the Hammers since January 2020 when they paid Middlesbrough a reported £4m for his signature. It is the Republic of Ireland shot-stopper’s second stint in the East End. He was on the West Ham books between May 2015 and July 2017, making 42 appearances in all competitions.
However, the former Motherwell man has played just a back-up role since returning to the London Stadium. He enjoyed two Premier League outings in 2019-2020 and three the following season.
But David Moyes has not offered him a single minute of competitive football this term. Lukasz Fabianski is first choice in the league while Alphonse Areola has a combined eight appearances across the Europa League and EFL Cup.
Therefore a move away makes sense if Randolph wants a more active role in the twilight years of his career. Emiliano Martinez is Villa’s undisputed number one, with 29-year-old Jed Steer his deputy.
Former Huddersfield Town loan player Steer may be the man to make way if Randolph is signed. That is according to Sky Sports, who report the Bray-born keeper is ‘in talks’ with the West Midlanders about a January switch.
The Football Daily Twitter account (via West Ham Zone) carry quotes from reporter Dharmesh Sheth about Steven Gerrard’s interest.
“We’re told they’re in talks to sign the West Ham United goalkeeper Darren Randolph,” he said. “If a deal can be struck between Aston Villa and West Ham United, then Villa could allow their second-choice goalkeeper Jed Steer to move on loan so that he can get more regular first-team football.”

Gerrard made a solid start to his Villa career, turning round a poor run of results that led to Dean Smith’s exit. However, three losses in the past four top-flight games has stalled their progress.
But the Liverpool legend is trying to do something about it. The Villans spent some of the Jack Grealish transfer money in the summer to strengthen.
However, there is still work to be done and the ex-England skipper is eyeing a quality left-back. He is reportedly targeting Everton defender Lucas Digne.
The France international has fallen out with Toffees chief Rafa Benitez and seems set to leave Goodison Park this month. Personal terms have been agreed, according to talkSPORT, and the 28-year-old will ink a long-term deal.
The reports suggests that Villa will need to fork out £25million to land the former Barcelona full-back.
