Aston Villa push past Prem suitors in pursuit of in-demand Burnley star James Tarkowski

James Tarkowski, Burnley, April 2022.

Aston Villa have become the latest Premier League side – along with Everton and Leicester City – with interest Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski.

Tarkowski was likely to become in demand the moment Burnley were relegated from the Premier League. Indeed, the centre-back was one of the Clarets’ most consistent performers over the past few seasons.

Tarkowski has racked up 194 Premier League appearances over six seasons. The 29-year-old has scored seven goals and produced five assists for Burnley in the top flight.

Of course, it was more his defensive capabilities that made him a crucial member of the side. The Turf Moor outfit finished inside the bottom five of the Premier League in four of the six seasons Tarkowski played there.

As such, he became accustomed to fighting tooth and nail to keep his side afloat. However, this season, Burnley’s resistance finally broke, and they were relegated from the top flight.

It seems Tarkowski may continue plying his trade in the Premier League, though. He is the subject of reported interest from Everton and Leicester City.

Aston Villa have also thrown their hat into the ring for the 29-year-old. Sky Sports reports that the Villans are in talks with Tarkowski over a deal.

The centre-back is out of contract with Burnley, and will be free to move to a club of his choice.

While each club is likely to be able to match his financial demands, some may be of more interest to him than others. Indeed, Leicester finished way above the other two sides, in eighth place.

However, the project at Villa may be a tough one to pass up on. Steven Gerrard has already recruited some top players in his time at the club – Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara especially – and that is likely to continue over the summer.

Tarkowski could slot in well at Villa

There have been reports that Gerrard wants to strengthen the defence at Villa Park during his first summer transfer window. His side conceded 54 goals in the 38 games in the recently-concluded Premier League campaign.

As such, defensive reinforcements may be warranted, and Tarkowski – with six years of Premier League experience – could be a fantastic addition.

Adding him to the group of centre-backs already at the club is likely to raise the standards of the defence. With more competition for places, each player will no doubt fight harder for their place in the side.

The fact Villa would not have to pay a penny in transfer fees to land such an accomplished defender is another bonus.

As such, the potential snare of Tarkowski seems a very good one, should they manage to pull it off.
