Aston Villa put wheels in motion for signing of problem-solving Premier League star

Jan Bednarek, Neal Maupay, Southampton v Brighton, April 2022

Aston Villa have reportedly made a loan offer to Southampton for Jan Bednarek, in order to solve the squad’s unfortunate problem in defence.

Villa looked to have made some good progress in the summer transfer window. Indeed, the signings that they have made all seemed to be decent additions on paper.

The main area of the squad that Steven Gerrard wanted to address was the heart of the defence. The manager was keen on solidifying the back line, and the addition of Diego Carlos seemed a great piece of business.

However, in just the second game of the season, the Brazilian went down with an Achilles injury. What’s more, it looks as if he will miss a large portion of the campaign after requiring surgery.

Last time out against Crystal Palace – the first game since Carlos’ injury – defensive issues were present. Indeed, the Villans conceded three goals as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against the Eagles.

Villa had already conceded three goals before that, in the first two games of the season. As such, it seems reinforcements are needed in order to stem the flow of goals.

Steven Gerrard seems to be aware of that, and is keen on making improvements at the back.

Football Insider reports that Villa have made a loan offer for Southampton centre-back, Jan Bednarek.

The Villans are keen to take him on loan, as they likely do not want to spend unnecessary money, not yet knowing when Carlos will return.

Given Bendarek did not feature in the Saints’ last game, they may be willing to accept the loan offer.

Bednarek a smart short-term addition

Adding Bednarek to the back line seems a smart fix for Villa. He will bring four years of consistent Premier League experience to the side if signed.

A loan seems an easy fix, too, given Carlos could return quicker than expected. Signing a player permanently to fix a short-term problem would make little sense.

As such, Villa will hope that Southampton do agree to the offer.

Clearly, Gerrard’s side do not want to continue shipping goals, and seemingly do not want to keep the same defenders in place, which could allow that to happen.

What’s more, one of the centre-backs who could offset the Carlos injury – Kortney Hause – is poised to join Watford on loan.
