John McGinn issues kick up backside to Aston Villa team, stating some could be ‘out the door’

John McGinn has stated the Aston Villa squad need to improve, or some players could be “out the door” as Steven Gerrard looks to freshen up the side.

Villa’s season has seen them struggle to put together many decent spells of form. Gerrard took over with the side in 16th, and initially inspired them to a decent run.

Of his first four games in charge, Gerrard managed to lead his side to three wins. However, that, along with a three-game winning streak between February and March have been Villa’s best runs of form.

There have been improvements in the side since Gerrard took over. The signings of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne have added quality to the side.

It seems that Gerrard will continue to recruit, and shape the squad to his liking in the summer. The Villans have been linked with multiple big names ahead of the window.

Nevertheless, Villa midfielder McGinn is disappointed with the side’s performances, given the stars in the team.

“We’re extremely disappointed,” he told VillaTV.

“I think with the calibre of player we’ve got in the dressing room we need to be doing a lot better.”

Indeed, Villa have gained just two places since Gerrard took over from Dean Smith.

The manager will no doubt be keen on having a much better season, and finishing higher in the table next term.

Nobody has particularly stood out for Villa this season. Coutinho started his loan spell in fine form, but has dropped off slightly since then.

McGinn feels that the players will need to up their games, or could see themselves forced out of the club.

“The manager has stressed he’s going to improve it. If we don’t improve personally and as a team, we’ll be the ones out the door because this club is going to go one way and that’s up,” he added.

“So it’s whether we want to join in and improve, get this club into the top half because it certainly hurts because we can’t do that. We’ll take the summer to reflect and we’ll come back in good shape and be ready to go in Australia.”

While this season has not been all too successful, Villa could still finish in the top half, should results on the final day go their way. That would require a win against title-chasing Manchester City, though.

McGinn feels Villa could take the game to City, and give them a good fight.

“When you’re up against it and you’re the underdogs, sometimes that’s when you thrive,” he said.

“They’ll be looking to have a party and celebrate the league but we’ll go there with our own aspirations and try and finish as high up as we can.”

A positive result against City would end things on a high note, and give Villa some confidence ahead of next season.
