Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli has issued an update on Boubacar Kamara, which could spell trouble for his side, amid interest from Aston Villa and others.
Interest in Kamara has been well reported of late. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, it was likely that teams would begin to queue up for him.
Not only is interest rife because of his contract situation, but the quality and consistency of his performances. The Frenchman has been a mainstay of the Marseille side, making 123 league appearances over the past four seasons.
His role in front of the defence has been crucial to Marseille’s good performances. Indeed, they sit third in the league, and have conceded just 38 goals in 37 games.
Sampaoli has praised the midfielder for his role in the side this term.
“He was very good for us this season; he played in several positions. He has always been very honest; he has played with heart. I respect him,” he said via Le 10 Sport.
However, Sampaoli’s comments were telling of Kamara’s future, which may well be away from Marseille.
“He has progressed a lot. I’m happy to see him called up to the French team. He has a lot of talent. If this is his last game, we will be sad, but we will wish him the best,” he added.
“Afterwards, on the fact of knowing why he did not extend his contract, it is not for me to make the analysis.”
Indeed, Marseille would have benefitted from Kamara remaining at the side – where he began his career – for a longer period.
Sampaoli references grounds for transfer
Sampaoli referenced the factors which led to Marseille having little chance of keeping hold of Kamara.
“There are other parameters that come into play; it does not concern the sport, but rather the entourage,” he said.
“As a coach, we always want to keep our players for the future, but we do not have this influence; it is rather other things that have influence.”
Indeed, it seems Aston Villa are in the box seat for the signing of the Marseille star. They have reportedly put more money down than another interested side, Atletico Madrid.
It appears that Kamara’s agent has played a big role, and the move may have been more focused on money than genuine footballing reasons. With that being said, Villa will be looking to challenge for European football in the next few seasons.
As such, a player like Kamara may not stand out all too much, especially with the likes of Philippe Coutinho in the squad.
