Aston Villa reportedly want three more major signings this summer, with Luis Suarez still a target for Steven Gerrard.
Villa have already acted fast since the season came to an end. A permanent deal was agreed early to land loanee Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona. They have also added Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos to their squad for £26m, while defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara also joined on a free.
But despite all this early business, Villa are far from finished inside the transfer market.
According to The Athletic, Villa are still hoping to improve their squad in three specific positions.
The club are in the market for a new striker, a left-sided defender, and a midfielder.
That being said, they are also still closely monitoring the situation of experienced forward Suarez.
The 35-year-old will be leaving Atletico Madrid once his contract expires at the end of June. However, his next destination is still uncertain.
It is reported that Villa boss Steven Gerrard has been in ‘regular contact’ with Suarez since January. The pair played alongside eachother at Liverpool from 2011-2014, before Suarez made the switch to Barcelona.
Suarez also played alongisde Coutinho during this spell, which could help persuade the Uruguayan to make the move to Villa Park.
Coming to the back-end of his career, Suarez is no longer the player he used to be, and it is uncertain how much longer he will continue to play.
However, the former Premier League Golden Boot winner will add a great deal of experience to the squad.
He also still has an eye for goal, bagging 11 goals from 35 matches last season in La Liga.
Luis Suarez could join two other big-name signings
The other two positions Villa are looking to improve is a midfielder and a left-sided defender.
Gerrard is keen to recruit a solid back-up for Lucas Digne at left-back, and has already identified two potential targets.
The report suggests that Villa were interested in Scotland international Aaron Hickey from Bologna. However, the 19-year-olds £20m price tag has pushed Villa away from the deal.
Aston Villa have shown their ambition so far
After sealing a deal for Diego Carlos, Aston Villa aren’t showing any signs of slowing down in the transfer market.
They are also looking closely at Rangers defender Calvin Bassey. Bassey was signed by Gerard for Rangers in 2018, and the boss is said to be a huge fan.
In midfield, Villa are still targeting a move for Yves Bissouma. The West Midlands club attempted to sign Bissouma in January, however, the deal was not accepted by Brighton.
Whatever the case, it is evident that Gerrard has the full backing of Aston Villa. The club are clearly investing heavily as they look to improve on their 14th-placed finish this season.
