Luis Suarez gives Steven Gerrard strong nudge with big hint over Aston Villa transfer

Luis Suarez, Atletico Madrid striker warms up before the Champions League clash with Manchester United

Veteran striker Luis Suarez has dropped the strongest hint yet that he is open to a return to the Premier League with Aston Villa after making clear his plans for the rest of his career.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard is quickly assembling a solid squad at Villa Park. January additions for Lucas Digne and, in particular, Philippe Coutinho really caught the eye. And with Gerrard’s philosophy rubbing off on his players, Villa are seeking a top-half finish in the Premier League.

And while the defeat at West Ham on Sunday was a setback, Villa still have won three of their last four.

Indeed, Gerrard is keen to make the loan capture of Coutinho into a permanent deal. They have a £33m option on the player, though the deal is far from straight forward. To that end, a top-four Premier League side are reportedly ready to pinch the deal from under Gerrard’s nose.

Gerrard, though, will keep getting in Coutinho’s ear in a bid to convince him to stay for the long-term.

And the pair could soon be joined at Villa Park by another Liverpool old boy in Suarez.

The 35-year-old striker was the subject of interest from Villa during the January window. According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, contact has been made between Villa and the striker.

Gerrard registers Luis Suarez interest

Gerrard has phoned his former Liverpool teammate to register the Premier League side’s interest.

And while that was turned down in January by both player and club, a summer swoop very much looks on the cards.

Indeed, with his deal due to expire this summer, Suarez knows his time at Atletico Madrid is running out. He finds himself well down the pecking order with Joao Felix, Antoine Griezmann and Joaquin Correa all ahead of him. Suarez was an unused sub on Tuesday night as Atletico won at Old Trafford to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

As per the Daily Mail, Uruguay’s all-time top scorer admits he wants another move in Europe before winding his career down in MLS, alongside great pal Lionel Messi.

Furthermore, reports earlier this year claim the offer from Villa – and the chance to link-up with Gerrard – has caught his eye.

Suarez against return to South American football

Having now spent 16 seasons in Europe, there are plenty who want to see Suarez return to play in his native South America.

Indeed,  Corinthians, Atletico Mineiro and Palmeiras are three such teams to also be linked.

However, Luis Suarez told compatriot Diego Lugano in an interview with ESPN that he cannot see himself playing there.

“I value so much the effort I have made to be at the top and leave a good image that,” he said. “If I return to South American football at 36 or 37, people will demand me as if I were 27 or 30.

“And if I can’t perform at that level, I’d rather they didn’t say I don’t run like I used. Or that I don’t score the same amount of goals.

“In order not to leave that image I prefer to continue enjoying myself somewhere else. Somewhere where my physical condition will give me as much as it will give me.

“That I can continue to enjoy football without that pressure that you feel in South America. It’s more than in the United States, Asia or wherever you want to enjoy at 37 years old.”
