Problematic Aston Villa star’s race is run as Steven Gerrard looks to offload him

Morgan Sanson, Aston Villa, April 2022.

Aston Villa are reportedly going to show Morgan Sanson the door after just 20 appearances for the club, due partly to his problematic attitude.

Sanson was signed from Marseille for £14million just over a year ago. The midfielder was picked up with a lot of promise, after contributing to 47 goals in 157 games for the French club.

He made a handful of appearances under Dean Smith last season, but never forced his way into the Villa side. He did not feature under Smith at all this season.

When Gerrard took over at the club, he gave Sanson a few chances to impress. The Frenchman came on off the bench in three consecutive games in the early stages of Gerrard’s tenure.

The manager has given him three starts to this point in the season. However, it seems Gerrard has seen all he needs, as he is reportedly willing to show Sanson the door, after only 20 Villa appearances.

Football Insider claims that Villa are going to tell Sanson he can find a new club in the summer.

There are a few reasons that the midfielder will be allowed to leave. Firstly, the report states that Sanson is ‘very hard’ to manage, and two agents have let him go in his career.

Secondly, he is one of a few players that are surplus to requirements at Villa Park.

Sanson has not scored or assisted in the senior side, and has had little impact.

As such, the decision to ship him out, and get some money back in seems a smart one.

Departure of Sanson paves way for new signings

Gerrard clearly has ideas for the future of the Aston Villa side. Indeed, the loan signing of Philippe Coutinho, which Villa are looking to make permanent is a statement of intent.

There will surely be a number of players on Gerrard’s wish list for the summer.

A defensive-midfielder seems a priority, given Villa were tracking a number of players in that position in January, meaning a replacement for the departing Sanson could soon join.

Offloading a fringe player like Sanson will free up funds, both from the fee he brings in, and from getting his wage off the books.
