Rangers put former Leeds target up for sale – but Aston Villa favourites as Steven Gerrard looks to replace £16m flop

Glen Kamara celebrates scoring Rangers' second goal with Ryan Kent Europa League - Semi Final - Second Leg - Rangers v RB Leipzig - Ibrox

Rangers are reportedly willing to listen to offers for midfielder Glen Kamara in January – with the bargain asking seemingly set to alert Aston Villa, TEAMtalk understands.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been at Ibrox since a bargain £50,000 switch from Dundee. He started his career with Arsenal, but only made one appearance in the League Cup during his time at Emirates Stadium. And it was while at Rangers that Kamara really started to make a name for himself.

Indeed, he thrived under the management of Steven Gerrard, becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.

However, he appears to have lost his way under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and is no longer a regular in the side. As such, he was close to signing for Nice over the summer with the deal failing to beat the deadline.

But a move away from Ibrox remains a very real possibility. As such, Football Insider now reports that Rangers are making it known to suitors that Kamara is free to leave in January.

Leeds United have reportedly had Kamara on their radar for some time. His tenacious displays in the middle of the park regularly caught the eye of their former boss Marcelo Bielsa. Director of football Victor Orta is also seemingly a fan.

Leeds, though, are unlikely to make a fresh move with Marc Roca and Tyler Adams emerging as their new favoured midfield pairing.

Nice remain on the scene and will reportedly look to push through a January deal.

However, TEAMtalk sources understand he will also come into Steven Gerrard’s thinking at Aston Villa.

Villa have some thinking to do with their midfield.

Douglas Luiz is out of contract next summer. To that end, a January move looks increasingly likely, with the star seemingly setting his heart on a move to Arsenal.

Rangers name their price for Glen Kamara

In addition, Villa are also reportedly willing to let Morgan Sanson leave the club in January.

Villa paid close to £16m for Sanson in January 2021, but he has struggled to make an impact. In his 21 months at the club, he has made just 20 appearances. And he’s yet to ply in a single Premier League minute this season.

As such, the 28-year-old Frenchman is free to leave Villa Park.

With potentially two absences to fill, we understand the interest from Villa to Kamara is growing.

Gerrard explored his potential signing last January – his first window at the helm – but ultimately decided to explore other options.

However, with Luiz and Sanson likely to depart, sources have informed us that

And with Rangers looking for a fee of around £10m for the Finland international, that fee is unlikely to deter Villa.

Midfielder signing ticks the box for Gerrard

The move to Villa Park certainly ticks plenty of boxes.

Villa will be getting their hands on a new midfielder and one whom Gerrard knows and trusts.

And for Rangers, it will allow them to offload a big-money asset and help balance the books at Ibrox. To that end, they seemingly need to offload some of their big names in order to invest in other areas of their squad.

For Kamara, it will also allow him to fulfil his dream of playing Premier League football.

That was denied to him when at Arsenal. But it could now become a reality under Gerrard and Villa.

Glen Kamara is contracted to Rangers until summer 2025 having signed a new four-year deal in September 2021.

Gerrard has been further convinced by Kamara’s ability to make an impact in the Premier League after playing a starring role for Rangers in their run to the 2022 Europa League final.
