Aston Villa are about to exercise their option to buy backup goalkeeper Robin Olsen on a permanent basis from AS Roma, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Olsen joined Aston Villa on loan from the Serie A side in January. It followed a similar spell at Sheffield United in the first half of the season, and one with Everton the year before.
In the end, he only made one appearance for Aston Villa. It came on the final day of the Premier League season, when he conceded three goals to Manchester City.
However, Steven Gerrard must have been impressed by Olsen behind the scenes. According to Romano, Villa are now ready to activate their option to buy Olsen.
They will pay Roma €3.5m (nearly £3m) to attain Olsen’s services on a contract of their own. There is no information provided on the length of any deal he may sign.
The Sweden international would then continue to deputise for Emiliano Martinez, who missed the Man City game due to a knee injury.
Martinez has denied that issue will be a long-term one and is ready to report back for pre-season in July. By then, he could be joined by Olsen again.
It would bring an end to four years under contract with Roma, who only used Olsen in the first of those seasons. They signed him as a replacement for Alisson Becker, but he was nowhere near the standard of the Liverpool man.
Olsen has been out on loan at various clubs ever since. Former Wolves man Rui Patricio has instead lived up to the task of being Roma’s number one.
He will be joined by a new backup keeper, Mile Svilar, in the summer. As such, Roma still have no use for Olsen.
Time for Robin Olsen to settle at Aston Villa
Now, Villa may be the destination where he finally settles.
A permanent move would continue a productive start to the summer for Villa. They have also made Phillipe Coutinho their own for good, as well as wrapping up agreements for Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos.
Hence, Olsen would be their fourth signing of the summer. Although, like Coutinho, he would be able to settle in instantly after being there for six months on loan.
In turn, Villa may have to find a new solution for Jed Steer, who went out on loan to Luton Town after Olsen’s January arrival. Steer is under contract for one more season.
Interestingly, while Villa are ready to buy Olsen, Roma are eyeing a signing from Gerrard’s squad themselves.
