Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard left in clear to sign frozen-out Juventus midfielder

Aaron Ramsey Juventus October 2021

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is keen on signing unwanted Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey, according to a report in Italy.

Ramsey’s time in Italy has not gone as he would have liked. In fact that’s an understatement. The Wales international has made just 70 appearances since signing for the Turin side in July 2019. He’s scored just six goals in that time and is currently frozen out of the first team under Max Allegri.

The Corriere dello Sport insist the former Arsenal star will leave the Serie A side “one way or another” this month.

Newcastle were thought to be leading the chase for the 31-year-old, who is under contract until 2023. But that speculation appears to be wide of the mark.

As per journalist Jonathan Shrager, there are currently no talks between the Magpies and Ramsey’s representatives with regards to a January move.

He tweeted: “I am told that there are currently no conversations between Newcastle United and Aaron Ramsey’s representatives regarding a possible January transfer.”

That could well leave Villa in the clear. Gerrard’s men have been namechecked as suitors by Sport Mediaset, as cited by Sport Witness.

The details are somewhat lacking though, with the outlet simply claiming Villa are ‘interested’ in the Wales international.

Gerrard is looking to strengthen his midfield. After a strong start by Gerrard his side have lost four of their last six Premier League games.

The last of those was Sunday’s 2-1 reverse at Brentford that left Gerrard far from happy.

Gerrard said: “They had three good attacks and two goals – that’s not good enough from our point of view. I thought we had enough quality in the squad to win. We should never have lost.

“If you lose your grit, your fight and your aggression to stop conceding goals it’s going to leave you vulnerable.”

Centre-back, left-back and central midfield look like the holes to fill for Gerrard, who admitted he will make some additions.

He said: “It’s not going to be wholesale, but there are opportunities to strengthen.”

Ramsey frozen out in Turin

So with Gerrard looking to add some depth to his squad and Ramsey apparently ready to  “personally negotiate his transfer with Juventus” a deal could be in the offing.

Juve’s desire to offload Ramsey is as strong as the former Cardiff man’s desire to leave.

Both Tuttosport and Gazzetta Dello Sport, have claimed Juve’s desire to shift Ramsey is strong.

Allegri has ‘given up any hope’ of Ramsey ever becoming a first-team regular at Juventus.

That would explain why Ramsey has made only one appearance since the end of September.

Injuries have halted his progress this season, but Ramsey is firmly out of favour in Turin. There are even claims the player has not been training with the rest of the squad for some time now.
