Journalist issues telling update on Aston Villa summer with fresh Gerrard, Liverpool link handy
The link between Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard and Liverpool is obvious, and the potential snare of Joe Gomez among others could yet happen this summer.
Gerrard started to shape the Aston Villa squad to his liking in January. The loan signing of Philippe Coutinho, especially, showed his ambition at the club.
Everything points to more big coups in the summer window. Indeed, there have been reports players such as Douglas Luiz, Anwar El Ghazi, Morgan Sanson being allowed to leave Villa Park.
And with a lot of outgoings, there could be some big inbound transfers. Villa have been linked with a number of interesting deals of late.
One potential deal that has been mentioned is that of Liverpool centre-back Gomez. Of course, Gerrard has a connection with the Reds, and is one of their most famous former stars.
Ashley Preece, a journalist who covers Villa, confirmed Gerrard’s desire to land Gomez recently.
“It’s one Villa like. Gerrard really keen on that but it’ll be down to Gomez himself to force a move out of Liverpool this summer. Two years left on his Anfield deal so a decision needs to be made,” Preece told Birmingham Mail.
It seems the ball is now in Gomez’s court. He has struggled for game time this season due to summer signing Ibrahima Konate taking his place in the team excellently.
He has subsequently filled in at right-back at times, although chances have come few and far between with Trent Alexander-Arnold in the team.
The prospect of working with a Liverpool legend, that clearly admires him, is likely an attractive prospect or Gomez.
And Gerrard’s connection with the Reds could help Villa to smooth out a potential deal.
Gerrard, Liverpool link clear beyond Gomez interest
Another potential signing Villa have been linked with is that of Luis Suarez. Of course, he and Gerrard played together while at Liverpool.
Preece mentioned the potential of a Villa move for the Uruguayan.
“Suarez remains an option. Can I see him at Villa? Not so sure but we all said that about Coutinho,” he said.
Coutinho was another player that spent time alongside Gerrard at Liverpool. It seems the deal to bring him to Villa Park permanently could well happen.
“Coutinho deal is, I’m told, likely to go through. Just a case of dotting Is and crossing Ts. Nothing new re Suarez; he’ll decide his next move once La Liga concludes. It’s an option for Villa,” Preece added.
Indeed, the connection between Coutinho, Suarez and Gerrard could bring them all together at Villa.
