Trusted Steven Gerrard lieutenant would be a hit for Aston Villa, says pundit

Glen Kamara Finland November 2021

Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara will be a hit in the Premier League for Aston Villa, according to one pundit.

Kamara was understood to be a target for Dean Smith at Villa Park. Now though with the link to Rangers strong after Steven Gerrard’s arrival, a deal looks more likely. The former Liverpool star arrived last week at Villa Park and with his backroom team in situ, he will now look to the capabilities of the squad and the transfer window.

Villa’s current interest in Kamara is noted, as per the Daily Record. The 26-year-old combative midfielder had been a crucial component in Gerrard’s engine room at Ibrox.

Gerrard desperately fought to keep the Finland midfielder at Ibrox.

Kamara’s form north of the border had a number of clubs chasing him in 2020 and Gerrard made it clear he wanted to keep him.

Speaking about extending the player’s contract in October 2020, Gerrard said: “I’ve made my feelings known to Ross (Wilson, sporting director) and the board on that situation.

“Glen has been fantastic for me since day one. He’s grown and he’s evolved. He’s improved and he’s listened.

“We want Glen around us for as long as possible and everyone knows my feelings on that situation.”

Kamara has since signed a new deal with Rangers. The player is now under contract until 2025, meaning Villa and Gerrard will have to pay the full market value to land him.

Kamara ‘could do a job in the Premier League’

As such, Gerrard and Aston Villa will likely have to pay Kamara’s full market value to seal a deal.

Asked whether Kamara would be a hit for Villa, former Villan Kevin Phillips gave any prospective deal the thumbs up.

“It wouldn’t surprise me one little bit if he went back in for one of the lads at Rangers,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“It’s great to have players in that midfield area who know how the manager works. Kamara knows how the ways in which manager works and he knows what he expects. That player can speak to the other players and help them understand what the manager wants, his philosophy.

“It makes sense that he would go back for one of his former players.

“Kamara is certainly a player who could do a job in the Premier League.”
