Aston Villa ‘well placed’ to sign £113m striker as Unai Emery aims to stun Man Utd, Arsenal

Aston Villa are reportedly ‘well placed’ to seal what would be a sensational transfer for new Villa Park boss Unai Emery.

On Tuesday, Spanish outlet Marca broke the news regarding Villa’s stunning pursuit for Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix, who is also wanted by Manchester United and Arsenal.

Journalist David Medina claimed Emery’s men are ‘already negotiating’ for the Portuguese forward, who wants out of Atletico in January.

The news got plenty of coverage in Spain and on Wednesday evening, Marca featured a live stream with Medina to discuss the surprise switch to Villa more.

Medina reiterated the claim that Felix has an awful relationship with Atletico boss Diego Simeone. That situation has seen Felix prompt his agent to seek a move elsewhere in the new year.

Medina stated ‘everything is in the hands of Jorge Mendes’. Indeed, Felix’s representative is known to be offering the forward to all clubs who can afford his signing.

While talk of Felix joining a Premier League club currently sitting 12th in the table appears unrealistic, the report adds that the majority of top-flight clubs in England actually have more money than Spain’s big sides and that makes a move attractive.

Felix auction on the cards

The only caveat from the interview is that Medina did actually mention Villa by name this time. He did, however, state that there is likely to be an auction for the player and Emery’s men are ‘well placed’ to try and strike a deal.

Emery knows the player well from his time in Spain and is a well-respected coach. However, both United and Arsenal can offer European football and that could be their trump card.

The Red Devils are looking at Felix to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit, while the Gunners are aiming to offset Gabriel Jesus’ injury suffered at the World Cup.

However, if Villa were able to pull off a coup for a player who cost Atletico £113million in 2019 it would some feather in Emery’s cap.

Felix has scored 33 goals in 129 games for Atletico but has never really lived up to his true potential.

Emery’s men are back in action on Boxing Day when they host Liverpool in the Premier League.
