Aston Villa, Leicester in contact with agent of major Tottenham centre-back target over potential January deal

Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij Inter Milan

Midlands rivals Aston Villa and Leicester have reportedly joined Tottenham and Atletico Madrid in the race to sign an Inter Milan centre-back.

Stefan de Vrij is currently considering a new contract at the San Siro, although he is the subject of serious interest from the Premier League trio as well as Diego Simeone’s men.

The Netherlands international is only under contract until the end of the current campaign. However, he has been offered a a new deal but on a lower salary.

It’s believed the proposal is at €3.5m per season for two years with an option for a third. But, for his part, De Vrij wants to remain at his current wages of €4.2m.

And with that sticking point causing a major issue, claims that the player could well be on the move.

De Vrij will have two options if he opts not to extend his stay in Milan.

Firstly, he could wait until his contract ends in the summer and pocket a decent signing-on fee as a free transfer. Or he could see if Inter are willing to sell for a knock-down price in the January window.

Either way probably works for both Villa and Leicester, who are in need of fresh recruits in the new year.

Tottenham turning to other targets

As for Tottenham’s interest, that appears to be on the slide as they look at other targets.

Antonio Conte is desperate to bring in another Inter star in Alessandro Bastoni or RB Leipzig’s impressive star Josko Gvardiol.

However, the price for the latter is likely to have gone through the roof after his displays at the World Cup.

The report adds several clubs have contacted agent Federico Pastorello to ask for information on the situation.

De Vrij joined Inter as a free agent from Lazio in 2018 and has made over 180 appearances for the club, scoring nine times.
