Arsenal deny Aaron Hickey agreement reports as new favourite from Premier League emerges

Bologna star Aaron Hickey

Brentford are believed to be the leading candidates to bring Aaron Hickey to the Premier League after Arsenal played down recent rumours.

Hickey has been impressing in Serie A for Bologna but the Scotland international could soon return to the UK. The former Hearts youngster will have several suitors in the Premier League.

In fact, there were recently claims that Arsenal had reached an agreement to sign him. Able to play in either full-back role, he would be a useful reinforcement at the Emirates Stadium.

But according to The Times, Arsenal have denied talk of an agreement. While they are listed as a linked party – along with Newcastle United and Napoli – the favourites come from elsewhere in London.

Instead, The Times write that Brentford are currently the frontrunners to secure Hickey’s signature.

After securing Premier League survival in their first season since promotion, Brentford are making plans for next term. They want to strengthen in the full-back positions.

In that regard, Hickey would be a helpful recruit. He has largely played on the left-hand side this season but can play on the right as well.

From 35 Serie A appearances this term – of which 34 were starts – Hickey has contributed five goals and one assist. It has certainly been a productive campaign for the 19-year-old, who could get even better.

Brentford could be best for Aaron Hickey development

Brentford would be hoping to benefit from his talents if they can get a deal over the line. They may be a good option for him to continue his path of growth with too.

Indeed, if he was to choose Arsenal instead, he may struggle to compete with Kieran Tierney and former Bologna teammate Takehiro Tomiyasu for regular starts.

In contrast, Brentford have a greater need and lower expectations. At his age, it may be the wisest next step for the Glaswegian.

But the Bees would need to spend relatively big to get their man. The report suggests the fee would be in the region of £13million; Brentford have only ever spent bigger on £14m man Kristoffer Ajer.

Hickey could be worth the investment, though. The Serie A side have him under contract until 2024, so this summer may be the optimal time to sell before his value begins to decline.
