Thomas Frank gives ‘optimistic’ Eriksen view and telling insight, with Brentford hopeful over Man Utd battle

Christian Eriksen, Denmark v Croatia June 2022

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has said that he has to be “optimistic” Christian Eriksen will renew terms, despite Manchester United closing in on his signing.

Eriksen is firmly back in the transfer spotlight after almost walking away completely from his playing career. The 30-year-old has recovered from his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 to attract Premier League attention again.

The Denmark star got himself back on track at Brentford and following one goals and four assists, he has made himself one of the most lucrative free agents this summer.

Brentford have offered Eriksen a new contract after his six-month spell there last season. However, Man Utd – whose new boss Erik ten Hag needs midfield reinforcements – have reportedly agreed a deal in principle with him and are looking to complete his medical.

Speaking to Danish publication B.T., Brentford head coach Frank revealed he is still “optimistic” and in regular contact with Eriksen.

“Right now he’s not a Brentford player, but he’s not a player for anyone else either,” the coach said.

“It may well be that right now it seems to be a different place than with us, but let’s see now.

“I have to be optimistic, but I also read newspapers. Lets see what happens. I communicate with Christian, but we keep it to ourselves until he is either signed here or somewhere else.”

Frank said that while Brentford have offered him a contract, Eriksen’s decision is about his “life and career” – not just football – and believes that the midfielder will have an offer “from almost everyone else”.

But Frank added that Eriksen felt “insanely happy” at Brentford last season and hopes the player will stick, not twist.

“I talked to him five minutes up in the national team camp and we have been in dialogue afterwards,” Frank said.

“But I have not met him in Copenhagen. We have told him our good story here, and he knows that version.

“He has been insanely happy to be here, and I know he considered us strongly when we gave him the offer – for many reasons.

“But I do not know anything about what he has decided.”

Midfielder looks like moving to Man Utd

Eriksen no doubt sees the fact that he is back playing at all a blessing, considering his trauma over the past 12 months.

However, now that he is back on track and performing well, he has decided his future carefully and looks like he will be moving to Man Utd.

Eriksen would get regular game time at either Brentford or Old Trafford. With the Bees, he would resume his role as Brentford’s star midfielder.

Christian Eriksen is a solid signing for Man United

Christian Eriksen has agreed a move to Manchester United, but they still need several other players in this window.

United, meanwhile, have let go of four midfielders over the summer so Ten Hag has big gaps to fill.

Both clubs are attractive propositions but it seems Eriksen has his heart set on joining Ten Hag’s ranks.
