Brentford transfer latest: Fee agreed as Bees close in on Eriksen replacement Mikkel Damsgaard

Brentford are reportedly closing in on the signing of Danish midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard for a fee in the region of £15million.

The Sampdoria playmaker was one the standout players at Euro 2020 last year as Denmark reached the semi-finals and it appears that he could finally be England bound, having been linked with Tottenham in the winter transfer window.

Spurs were looking at Damsgaard as a creative attacking force but ended up signing Dejan Kulusevski instead.

But a move to London still appears to be on the cards, with the 22-year-old set to join up with Thomas Frank’s men.

Gianluca di Marzio claims Damsgaard will join for £15m. Fabrizio Romano, meanwhile, has tweeted the fee will be £12.5m with add-ons.

Frank wants to bring in Damsgaard as the perfect replacement for Christian Eriksen.

The Swede played a huge part in steering Brentford to a mid-table finish in their first Premier League season.

But despite having an offer on the table to remain in west London, Eriksen eventually joined Manchester United.

Damsgaard’s fee is relatively low after he suffered an injury-hit campaign with Sampdoria in 2021/22.

The attacking midfielder only managed 11 appearances in total but is now fully fit and ready to go.

In total, Damsgaard has scored just twice in 49 appearances for the Serie A outfit, adding four assists.

Euros put Damsgaard on the map

However, his performances at the Euros, where he scored a stunning free-kick against England in the last four, really put him on the radar of Premier League clubs.

At just 22 and a potential cost of £15m, Damsgaard could be an absolute snip. He would also give Frank the sort of creativity he needs from his midfield after Eriksen’s exit.

The Bees begin the new Premier League campaign with a trip to Leicester on Saturday August 7.
