Brentford could face a fight to keep hold of midfielder Sergi Canos this summer with reports claiming Barcelona are targeting a surprise swoop.
Canos has impressed for the Bees in the Premier League this season and his form has not gone unnoticed. Indeed reports are now rife suggesting that Barca want to take him back to Spain. Canos was in Barca’s youth system until the age of 16 before he joined Liverpool.
The 25-year-old eventually ended up at Brentford where he has gone on to realise his potential. He has gone on to make almost 200 appearances for the Bees.
Canos was a revelation in the Championship last season as Brentford won promotion. He made 55 appearances, contributing to 19 goals, and has had no issue making the step up to the Premier League.
The Spaniard has made 30 appearances this season scoring two goals. He has also chipped in with two assists as Brentford sit 14th on the table.
Such form has now kicked off suggestions that Barcelona want him back. The Catalan giants face a huge summer as they look to revamp their squad. They are way behind leaders Real Madrid in La Liga and have to try and close the gap.
Xavi brought in some big signings after being named as coach in November 2021. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang arrived from Arsenal in January, while Ferran Torres also signed. It helped them to climb the table but more investment is needed.
However reports claim they do not have a great deal of cash to spend. Barcelona are still working under some restrictions and Xavi will have to be shrewd with his signings. Hence the link to Canos.
Spanish publication Sport say a deal could happen. They report that Canos would fit within the restrictions they have to work under.
Sergi Canos on Barca radar
Canos is under contract until the end of next season. It is thought that Brentford do have the option to extend it. However that has yet to happen and could leave the door open for Barcelona to swoop. Sport claim that a fee in the region of £8.5m could get the deal done. While his wages would not be an issue either.
Brentford will be keen to keep hold but any move could come down to the player. It remains to be seen if they would stand in Canos’ way if he did want to leave.
It is a tough call for Canos to make. The chance to join a club like Barca is obviously a tempting one. However he is likely to spend more time on the bench than playing. At Brentford he is a regular starter playing in the best league in the world. That is sure to count for a lot if he has a decision to make.
