Chelsea star ends frustrating Stamford Bridge stay after sealing £10m switch to Brighton

Brighton have signed midfielder Billy Gilmour from Premier League rivals Chelsea for an initial £7.5m fee that could rise to £10m with add-ons.

The Scotland international spent last season on loan at Norwich City and has not featured for the Blues at all this season after failing out of favour with Thomas Tuchel.

The former Rangers youngster was an unused substitute for Chelsea in both the FA Cup and Champions League finals in 2021.

However, he’s become the second Blues player to join Brighton this summer, after Levi Colwill signed on loan in August.

Gilmour only extended his stay at Stamford Bridge back in June, when he penned a new deal until 2024. But he leaves, having made just 21 appearances for the club.

The 21-year-old impressed during his early Chelsea career and starred for Scotland in their Euro 2021 draw with England at Wembley last summer.

However, he slipped down Tuchel’s midfield pecking order and ended up on loan at Norwich last season.

His spell at Carrow Road did not go to play though. Gilmour often found himself on the bench as the Canaries were relegated from the Premier League.

The midfielder now gets the chance to resurrect his career under Graham Potter at The Amex.

And speaking about the signing, Potter said: “Billy arrives with a fantastic pedigree, having played in the Premier League and Champions League as well as for Scotland at last year’s Euros. He will complement our existing midfield options.

“That experience at quite a young age shows the strength of character he has. And we’re really excited by his potential.

“Now it’s about allowing him the time to get used to a new environment and settling in to our club. We can’t wait to work with him.”

Meanwhile, Seagulls striker Florin Andone, who scored six goals in 30 appearances after joining Brighton in 2018, has had his contract terminated by mutual consent.
