Man City target Marc Cucurella leaves his future in the balance with cryptic claim

Marc Cucurella playing for Brighton

Marc Cucurella has refused to rule anything out this summer after stating “we’ll see what happens” in regards to his Brighton future.

Since arriving from Getafe in the summer, Cucurella has been a standout player in Graham Potter’s team. The wing-back has gelled into Brighton’s system nicely and has produced some moments of sheer class throughout the season.

Cucurella and Tariq Lamptey complement each other’s style of play well. The pair can dart up and down the wings and cover when needed.

The Spain international is also a very versatile player. The 23-year-old has played in the majority of positions during his career but the left-hand side is his favoured area of the pitch.

A report by Mundo Deportivo hasn’t made the defender’s future any more clear, however. The report claims that Cucurella is ‘very calm about the situation’ despite interest being shown by Manchester City.

“It’s good that they talk about me, this means that I’ve done things well and it motivates me to continue working,” he said.

“Yes, I have received news and I like to read it, even if it is only out of curiosity. Many times they are just rumours that do not end in anything. We’ll see what happens.”

Cucurella is a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy. The defender only made one appearance for the club but has said he would love to return one day.

He added: “I spent many years at the academy, I came to Barça B and I had a few minutes in the cup, but I was stuck with not being able to play at the Camp Nou. I would very much like to be able to return one day, really.”

These claims make it seem as if not even Cucurella himself knows where he will ply his trade next season. Brighton fans will, however, hope he is still in a blue and white strip next campaign.

Cucurella on his own season

The 23-year-old has been a shining light among the Seagulls’ camp this season and has consistently performed above expectations.

Brighton have finished inside the top 10 for the first time since they joined the Premier League back in the 2017/18 season. The work Potter has done with the club is special and shouldn’t be looked over.

Cucurella is a player that has been ever-present in Potter’s squad since he joined three games into this season and has helped turned their fortunes around.

The wing-back has appeared 35 times in the Premier League this season, during which he has contributed to two goals. These comprise of one goal and one assist.

He has really matured this year, which has resulted in his style of play becoming much more refined.

He further added: “I’m very happy with the season I’ve had. I think it’s been the year of my maturation as a footballer, where all the work of recent years has been seen.

“When I signed for Brighton I knew it was a good opportunity and at the moment I’m taking advantage.”

The Spain international has settled into England’s top flight almost instantaneously. This is one of the key reasons he has outperformed expectations this season.
