Premier League block Burnley’s bid to rescue winger from Spartak Moscow

The Premier League have blocked Burnley’s bid to rescue Victor Moses from his spell with Russian side Spartak Moscow, claim reports.

Former Chelsea striker Moses, 31, moved to Spartak on a permanent deal last summer. He had spent the previous campaign there on loan and helped them qualify for the Champions League. Now the winger is desperately trying to leave the country after their invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Premier League has continued, despite the war raging with neighbouring Ukraine for a month.

Moses was a sub last weekend in Spartak’s draw with Nizhny Novgorod. But many foreign players and their families have fled the country.

What’s more FIFA have approved mid-season transfers for players currently playing in both Russia and Ukraine.

In a statement on March 7, football’s world governing body said clubs in other countries would be allowed to sign up to two players who had been at clubs in Russia or Ukraine.

Sparv: We need to give them a chance

Those players would be viewed as out of contract and as such Burnley had made an approach to try and sign Moses on a deal until the end of the season.

But the Daily Mail reports that “the Premier League have ruled they will not accept any requests for new transfers due to concerns over the sporting integrity of the competition”.

Italy’s Serie A and Germany’s Bundesliga have also prevented transfers for similar reasons. However, LaLiga and the Championship have allowed those type of signings.

Sheffield United became the first English side to recruit a player who has been freed due to FIFA rules. Filip Uremovic signed for the Blades after his contract with a Russian outfir Rubin Kazan was suspended.

Former Finland captain Tim Sparv told Sky Sports News: “We need to do everything we can to help players get out of Russia, a country led by a dictator.

“We need to give them the chance to go and play somewhere where they feel safe. This is a humanitarian issue.”
