Burnley manager latest: Clarets close to getting Vincent Kompany deal over the line after talks commence

Vincent Kompany managing Anderlecht

Vincent Kompany is on the cusp of taking over as Burnley manager despite the club being relegated from the Premier League this season, per several reports.

Kompany joined his current club, Anderlecht, as a player/manager in 2019. But he has since hung his boots up to pursue a managerial career. The former Manchester City captain has had a good couple of seasons with the Belgian club; they ended the current season in third.

He brought a breath of fresh air around a dilapidated Anderlecht camp and met the expectations that were set.

Since the sacking of Sean Dyche, however, Kompany has been linked with a move back to England as the manager of Burnley.

The rumours first came about when Burnley seemed safe and as if they were going to avoid the drop.

Alas, despite the club’s upturn in form towards the end of the season, it just wasn’t enough to secure Premier League survival.

The Guardian are, however, now reporting that Kompany is still interested in taking Burnley up on their offer of a managerial position. The Athletic, the Telegraph and the Times have also relayed there have been talks between the parties.

The Guardian‘s report claims that a parting of ways suits both Kompany and Anderlecht, after the club finished in third position in the Belgium First Division.

The former Belgium international’s wife and kids are both from Manchester, as Kompany spent from 2008-2019 with Man City. This makes a return viable and the surroundings would be familiar to his family.

Is Kompany the right match for Burnley?

Over the course of the last season, Kompany has often deployed a four-at-the-back formation. His most preferred version of a back four is the 4-4-2.

When managed by Sean Dyche, the Clarets also often used a 4-4-2 formation. By introducing a manager who uses the same formation, the team will blend quickly.

Under Dyche, Burnley often played a lot of long balls over the top of opposing defences. Though, Kompany has a far different approach. He prefers his team to play short, intricate passes to gradually build up attacks, as opposed to hoofing the ball up to the forwards.

In a league as tough as the Championship, this tiki-taka style of play may not be as effective, however.

England’s second tier is often spoken about as one of the most competitive leagues across the world. Each team has an almost equal ability to beat one another.

All in all, despite Kompany not managing outside of Belgium, he would be a top acquisition on Burnley’s behalf.

He would provide them with a new sense of play and reignite the talents of the players within the squad.
