Chelsea are in a strong position to land a deal for a prolific Ligue 1 forward as talks are ‘now advancing’ according to Fabrizio Romano.
Having struggled to find the back of the net on a consistent basis last season, it’s no secret that Chelsea are looking to strengthen their forward options this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have already added the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson who should ease their goalscoring problem.
Chelsea aren’t done with their business yet as they are now ramping up their interest in Montpellier striker Elye Wahi. West Ham also like the 20-year-old, but Chelsea are in a strong position to land a deal.
“Understand Chelsea are now advancing in talks to sign Elye Wahi — agreement getting closer, new negotiations round scheduled with Montpellier,” Romano clarified on Twitter.
“Chelsea plan includes loan move for Wahi this season then Chelsea future. Chelsea want to accelerate next week as there’s competition.”
Wahi would be a useful option to a manager like Pochettino. The 20-year-old can play anywhere across the forward line and he has a razor-sharp eye for goal.
In Ligue 1 last season, the forward scored 19 goals and provided five assists. He averaged a goal contribution every 105 minutes and it’s no wonder a side like Chelsea is interested.
Last season was the most prolific campaign in Wahi’s career to date and he could still improve from this point. He is under contract at Montpellier until 2025 and the French club will be keen to iron out his future as soon as possible.
Chelsea have an alternative target in mind
While Pochettino seems keen on a move for Wahi, Chelsea won’t be putting all of their eggs in the same basket. It recently came to light that Chelsea are also weighing up a move for Ajax star Mohammed Kudus.
According to David Ornstein, Chelsea have ‘made contact’ with Ajax and personal terms for Kudus shouldn’t be a problem for Chelsea.
Arsenal are also said to hold an interest in the Ajax attacking midfielder, although they will need to offload some players before making another signing.
The 22-year-old had an eye-catching World Cup campaign for Ghana and he has just had a solid league campaign with Ajax.
Kudus scored 11 league goals and provided three assists for Ajax last season. Pochettino will value the versatility of the Ajax man as he is capable of playing in a number of positions across the forward line.
He is under contract at Ajax until 2025 and he recently rejected a fresh contract offer from the club as he pushes for a move away.
Chelsea themselves have had a mass exodus of players this summer with over 13 first team players being sold or released so far this summer.
More departures are to be expected over the following weeks and Pochettino will be hopeful of landing a signing or two himself before the season starts.
