Agreement ‘close’ for Barcelona to sign Marcos Alonso from Chelsea by ‘next week’

Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso

Barcelona believe they will be able to sign Marcos Alonso from Chelsea for less than €10m, with a deal for the full-back reportedly close.

Alonso could be on his way out of Chelsea this summer, bringing an end to his stint as Ben Chilwell’s backup. When the England international was injured last season, Alonso got good gametime. But now, aware Chilwell will be first choice again, he is ready to move on for a new challenge.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with Alonso, since their only senior left-back at present is the 33-year-old Jordi Alba. Taking Alonso back to Spain would give them better cover.

A deal may also suit Chelsea, given that the former Fiorentina man is now in the final year of his contract. They will want to get the right price for him, though.

According to Diario Sport, a deal is now close between Barcelona and Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel has sanctioned Alonso’s departure.

The report claims Barcelona will try to complete the deal next week, in time for their pre-season tour of the USA. They are hoping to spend no more than €10m (£8.6m) for Alonso’s signature, despite the Blues initially wanting more.

Then, they will tie him down to a three-year contract in Catalonia. Further talks with Chelsea are imminent so they can get to that stage.

If he was to move to Barcelona, Alonso would be following in the footsteps of Andreas Christensen, who left Chelsea on a free transfer this week. They could also be joined by Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta, although negotiations are more complicated in his case.

Time right for Marcos Alonso to move on

Despite his 25 Premier League starts last season, Alonso would not be relied on as heavily next term. Therefore, it could be time for him to end his Chelsea career at a tally of 211 appearances.

They are comfortably the club he has represented the most during his career. However, if he wants to enjoy his final few years as a professional, he maybe ought to find somewhere he will play more.

Barcelona would be another big club to move to, but they may have more of an opening for him. Playing in La Liga again after a long absence would also be a welcome move for the former Real Madrid youngster.

Interestingly, Chelsea already have an idea of how they might replace Alonso – and it involves raiding a relegated club.
