Chelsea backed to replicate Roman Abramovich transfer policy with ‘perfect’ double midfield deal

Chelsea should be looking to sign two members of England’s World Cup squad to secure an exciting future, according to one of their former defenders.

Since Todd Boehly took control of the club earlier this year, any fears that Chelsea would not be as busy in the transfer market have been well and truly allayed. Previously a force to be reckoned with under the ownership of Roman Abramovich, they went on to enjoy the highest-spending transfer window of all time after the club changed hands.

Boehly brought in the likes of Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly for big money over the summer. Surprisingly, the sacking of head coach Thomas Tuchel followed shortly after.

In 2023, Chelsea will instead have to build a squad for his successor, Graham Potter. One area of the team they might want to address is midfield.

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, two players in their 30s, are both out of contract at the end of the season. There are also doubts as to whether Denis Zakaria will stay beyond the end of his loan spell from Juventus.

Therefore, the engine room is somewhere Chelsea might have to evolve. In that regard, a deal for former academy player Declan Rice has come back into focus.

A few sources have been suggesting that Rice is almost certain to leave West Ham next year, when he will be approaching the final 12 months of his contract at the London Stadium.

The England international could be the ideal successor to Jorginho at the base of Chelsea’s midfield.

Elsewhere in the department, Chelsea have also been suggested as a contender for the signature of Rice’s international colleague, Borussia Dortmund sensation Jude Bellingham.

Although they are different types of midfielder, it might have to be a choice of one out of the two. But according to ex-Chelsea player Wayne Bridge, Chelsea should be trying to sign both.

Chelsea urged to opt for both English talents

Bridge told Football London: “They’re the future aren’t they? Young guys at the top of their game, great talent.

“He’s great Jude, I think he’s probably one of England’s best players and he’s going to be around a long time. Obviously Declan, he sits in that midfield, he can make teams tick sometimes.

“He’s playing that [Claude] Makelele-type role, he’s great defensively, he’s great at passing and he is actually technically a very skilful player as well.

“I’ve seen stuff in training that he does with the ball – he’s a very good player and an intelligent player as well.

“I’d like to see both. In the Premier League these days you need a lot of good players. You don’t need just 11 good players, you need 22, 25 players.

“They would be perfect for Chelsea. It would be great. Especially English, when I first went to Chelsea, you get that English core. It was really good from Roman and Chelsea to get a load of English players in, it creates a good core and they seem like good lads.

“For me, it would be a no brainer. It’s just can you get them? There’s going to be a lot of people wanting them.”

Financially, signing both Rice and Bellingham may not be the most sensible idea. However, Chelsea are one of the richest clubs in the world, so might be able to pull it off.

From a pure footballing point of view, they are two players who would improve what Chelsea have in the middle of the park for years to come.

As Bridge acknowledged, though, competition will be fierce for both players. Hence, it might be more realistic to put all their energy into focusing on one for the time being.
