Chelsea owner and sporting director Todd Boehly has reportedly held a transfer meeting with the agent of Manchester United target Benjamin Sesko.
The 19-year-old is proving a man in demand this summer following his recent rise at RB Salzburg. He enjoyed a solid breakthrough season last term but is now the Austrian club’s main marksman.
Indeed, Salzburg sold Karim Adeyemi to Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer. And they believe Sesko will be the latest gem off their production line.
The Slovenia international has already impressed this season, scoring and assisting in Salzburg’s opening game of the campaign. What’s more, a fantastic performance in a pre-season clash with Liverpool – where he scored the winner – earned him more plaudits.
As a result, Man Utd football director John Murtough reportedly met with the player’s agent last month.
According to the latest from Sport Klub, Elvis Basanovic has also spoken to Chelsea owner-cum-sporting director Boehly.
Chelsea want to add to their attack this summer after signing Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.
Boss Thomas Tuchel has seen club-record signing Romelu Lukaku return to Inter on loan and subsequently wants a fresh face in.
The earlier reports of Man Utd interest in Sesko claimed the Red Devils were preparing a bid.
Sport Klub claims Chelsea were only testing the water with Boehly’s initial meeting and that talks will continue in the coming days.
Benjamin Sesko transfer fee could frustrate
But both United and Chelsea will reportedly have to stump up £55million to sign Sesko.
Salzburg have already let Adeyemi go and do not want to lose two star forwards in the same window.
Still, every player has a price and it remains unclear whether the Premier League duo will meet Salzburg’s demands.
Salzburg’s stance is similar to that of Ajax. They have already lost Ryan Gravenberch and Lisandro Martinez – the latter to Old Trafford – with the Red Devils now struggling to sign Brazilian star Antony.
Slovenian star a promising talent
The Red Bull football stable has produced many household names across Europe in recent seasons and Sesko looks like another on the same path.
Liverpool have benefitted from poaching Salzburg and RB Leipzig players, signing the likes of Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino.
Chelsea, meanwhile, raided Leipzig for Timo Werner – although he has struggled overall at Stamford Bridge.
Are Chelsea finding themselves in a difficult situation during pre-season?
Should Chelsea fans be worried for the start of the campaign after losing out on any transfer targets and a somewhat underwhelming pre-season performance?
At 19, Sesko would be wise to spend one more season at Salzburg before moving away next summer. Not only can he develop in the Austrian league, but in the Champions League too.
Standing tall and scoring goals for Salzburg will do his profile the world of good – as it did Erling Haaland as he then moved to Dortmund after his rise in the competition.
