Big transfer slap for Todd Boehly with ‘erratic’ Chelsea spending blamed for missing out on top England star

Todd Boehly, Chelsea chairman, after the Premier League match between Chelsea and Watford at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have reportedly been told they have next to no chance of signing one of the game’s most in-demand stars this summer after their scattergun approach to transfers since Todd Boehly took charge.

The Blues signed eight players during January, with the last-gasp £105.6m deal for Enzo Fernandez breaking the British transfer record. The Argentina star moves to Stamford Bridge just half a year after joining Benfica for a mere £9.5m.

Fernandez, understandably, ranks highly on our list of the top 10 worst value for money January transfers.

Indeed, his capture takes Chelsea’s winter window spending through the £300m barrier.

Add that to the fact that Chelsea also spent another £270m during the summer on nine new arrivals.

The situation has certainly added to the difficulties Graham Potter has had since moving to Stamford Bridge as manager. Trying to find his best side is hard enough at a new club, without the added stress of trying to accommodate 17 new faces.

Indeed, there have been departures too. The exit of Jorginho on deadline day will certainly be felt at Chelsea.

Certainly Boehly is not shy at spending money on new players. Any thoughts that Chelsea’s excessive spending under the Roman Abramovich regime would end with his departure have very forcefully been put to bed.

However, not everyone is entirely appreciative of Boehly’s spending.

As a result, it is easy to see why the likes of Gary Neville have been quick to point an accusing finger at Boehly.

And with that policy likely to continue into the summer 2023 window, their incredible spending spree shows no signs of abating.

Now another negative aspect of that aggressive transfer policy has emerged. And it seems their approach is actually starting to put some players off.

Jude Bellingham rules out move to Chelsea

And according to SportBILD, Borussia Dortmund star has now firmly crossed Chelsea off his transfer list.

A man in demand, the teenage star will be able to have his pick of clubs this summer. To that end, the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City are reportedly leading the charge.

Manchester United – with a sizeable summer budget at their disposal – cannot be ruled out the equation. The same can be said of Chelsea.

However, the German publication claims Bellingham and his entourage are emphatically ruling out a move to west London.

Citing their ‘erratic spending’, it is deemed that a move to Chelsea is something they are very much advising against. That tallies with a TEAMtalk exclusive about Bellingham and Chelsea from November.

Instead, Bellingham will pick from the other sides all mentioned, with a move into the Premier League looking a likely outcome.

The report does also state, however, that Bellingham has made it known to Dortmund chiefs that this will be his last at the club.

Indeed, talk of him signing a new deal with BVB and staying at the Westfalenstadion are ‘no longer an option’ for him.

As a result, speculation over his future is likely to significantly increase over the coming weeks and months.

And despite a likely asking price of some €120m, Liverpool do at this stage appear to be leading that race.

Those hopes grew recently after TV presenter Valentina Maceri explained why she is convinced Bellingham will join the Merseysiders.
