Chelsea ace not out the door yet as ‘renewed optimism’ over contract to irk Liverpool
Chelsea reportedly ‘believe they can convince’ Mason Mount to sign a new contract, as the star may ‘share the ambition’ of a new manager.
Mount has been one of Chelsea’s most influential players for some time. That he was directly involved in 13 league goals in his first senior campaign for the club after a season in the Championship showed his promise.
That promise has been on show ever since, particularly last season. Indeed, it was his best campaign by a long way – Mount scored 13 goals and provided 16 assists in all competitions.
In all, the attacking-midfielder has been directly involved in 70 goals in 193 senior appearances for the Blues.
As such, it would appear he’s a vital member of their plans, and a player they’d give their all to keep around.
However, off-field matters have suggested that’s not quite the case. Reports have suggested he wants to be brought in line with the top earners at the club when signing a new contract; his current deal is up at the end of next season.
It seems that’s not being taken into account in contract negotiations, as he’s apparently rejected every offer Chelsea have made.
Things do not look good for his future, with talks having been shelved. TEAMtalk revealed in February that Mount would be sold if the Blues can’t agree a deal with him.
‘Renewed optimism’ over Mount contract
Since the brunt of the contract negotiations, Graham Potter has been sacked as manager. It seems that development might be able to help Chelsea tie Mount down.
Indeed, 90min reports the Blues have a ‘renewed sense of optimism’ over him remaining. That’s due to the potential of an exciting new manager taking charge.
The report states the club ‘believe their new plans are impressive enough’ to see their star remain.
It adds that bosses ‘with experience at the highest level’ are being considered and Chelsea are confident Mount will share the ‘ambition and positivity’ that comes with a top managerial appointment.
On top of that, the star is ‘understood to be feeling more confident about the future of the club’ due to those plans.
Mount stay will be a big bonus
Throughout the saga, the prospect of Mount leaving has seemed strange. A 24-year-old homegrown player who has been in great form over the past couple of seasons being allowed to leave would have been a massive blow.
Indeed, it would have been an even bigger loss had he gone to a direct rival.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for the England star. The Reds are in a similar position to Chelsea in that they have slipped below their standards and will be looking to climb back to their rightful position next season.
Mount could help either side do that, given how impactful he has been in the Premier League. Chelsea would surely rather he was impacting their side rather than a rival’s.
