Chelsea get green light to sign Man Utd target whose club will roll over once specific bid is made

Netherlands stars Wout Weghorst and Denzel Dumfries

Chelsea can dash Man Utd plans by signing a Dutch international in January if a specific bid is tabled, and the player’s club have no qualms about pushing their man out of the door, per a report.

The Blues are on the cusp of wrapping up a deal for Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix. Fabrizio Romano gave the six-month loan deal his signature ‘here we go’ confirmation on Tuesday, though Todd Boehly’s chequebook will remain open.

Indeed, David Ornstein reported ‘more reinforcements’ are expected to follow Felix into Stamford Bridge. Today’s Transfer Gossip highlighted two players – a Man Utd target and a former Spurs attacker – who are being targeted.

However, a fresh update out of Italy has put Chelsea in pursuit of another player on Man Utd’s radar.

Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries is the man in question, with the Netherlands wing-back courting admiring glances from Chelsea, Man Utd and Tottenham.

Dumfries has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the event Aaron Wan-Bissaka is moved on.

The ex-Crystal Palace right-back has proved his worth of late. However, his attacking limitations remain and Diogo Dalot will quickly re-establish himself as first-choice.

United are unable to move for Dumfries – or any expensive signing, for that matter – this month. The Red Devils overspent in Erik ten Hag’s first window and as such, are limited to more cost-effective moves at present, such as for Wout Weghorst.

A summer move would therefore be ideal when the coffers have been re-stocked, but per Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea can sign Dumfries right now.

Chelsea get green light… but for a price

Via Sport Witness, it’s claimed Inter would prefer to sell their starting right wing-back in June, but will do business in January if the right bid is tabled.

It’s explained Inter’s €60m (approx. £53m) valuation applies this month as much as the summer. Chelsea are deemed ‘still on the hunt for full-backs’ and Inter ‘would not get in the way’ if Boehly meets their demands.

On the contrary, Inter are in a hole financially and previous reports suggested Dumfries was the man they’ve determined can go to ease their cash woes.

Gazzetta add Inter will actively push Dumfries out of the door if £53m is bid. In their words, the Serie A side will ‘facilitate the exit door’ opening.

Graham Potter can already call upon one of world football’s premier right-backs in Reece James.

However, the England ace continues to struggle with injury and his primary back-up, Cesar Azpilicueta (33), is aging.

A move for Dumfries would give Potter plenty of depth and options on the right side of his defence.

Indeed, both Dumfries and James can play as a wing-back, while the pair could line up together in a back five, with Dumfries at wing-back and James at right centre-back in a three.

The ball is now in Chelsea’s court.
