Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi has revealed how manager Thomas Tuchel inspired his standout display against Norwich.
The 20-year-old netted the second goal of the Blues’ seven on Saturday in the Premier League contest. He may have only lasted 70 minutes, but he did more than just score his goal. Indeed, his pace and dribbling proved too much for Ozan Kabak.
What’s more, it was something of a landmark performance for Hudson-Odoi.
With Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku injured, he stepped up when in the team with his first Premier League goal this term.
As such, he could be in for an extended role with the two frontmen absent from Tuchel’s side.
However, Hudson-Odoi has revealed the advice Tuchel gave him before the match, which inspired his performance.
“It was just to keep putting in the intensity, and keep working hard and going forward and being direct – be myself,” the attacker told the Evening Standard.
“And try to create as many opportunities as possible, try to score. Be decisive in the box.
“It was good the sort of instructions that he gave to me, playing in that position – to be free, to do what you do, and try to make things happen. It was very influential for me, it was good.
“You have got to prove it to yourself as well, keep on doing your stuff.
“When you are playing, every game, you have got to show yourself and show how capable you are of playing and doing it every game, show consistency and put in a good performance to show that you are worthy of playing in the team.”
Saturday’s game was only Hudson-Odoi’s seventh outing this campaign. Overall, he has only managed to amass 463 minutes of game time across all competitions.
Nevertheless, his performance may lead to a greater role in proceedings for him going forward.
Tuchel warns about Chelsea’s Mount
While Hudson-Odoi netted, Mason Mount arguably stole the show against Norwich with his hat-trick.
He also notched an assist as the England international walked away with the match ball.
Mount netted his first strike after eight minutes before setting up Reece James. He then added two more goals in the dying stages of the match.
However, after the match, Tuchel warned that he has to be careful over the midfielder’s fitness.
