Chelsea are reportedly ‘finalising’ a deal for Villarreal attacker Nicolas Jackson, who is ‘desperate’ to make the switch to Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have already agreed personal terms with the 22-year-old, but recent reports suggest negotiations over a transfer fee are not straightforward.
That is because Chelsea would allegedly prefer to pay Jackson’s £30m release clause in instalments. This has not gone down well with Villarreal, who want the money upfront.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are now in the process of ‘finalising’ the deal, which is good news for Mauricio Pochettino and Jackson.
Last season, the youngster made 38 appearances across all competitions for Villarreal. In the process, he scored 13 goals and made five assists.
A versatile player, Jackson can play as a winger on either flank or as a centre-forward. So, he could provide cover in a number of key areas for Chelsea next term.
With that in mind, Pochettino will no doubt be keen to sign Jackson as soon as possible. Now, everything points towards him joining the Blues this summer.
Chelsea look set for a busy summer
It’s expected to be a very busy summer for Chelsea, who look set to sell and bring in several players.
For instance, N’Golo Kante has already joined Saudi club Al-Ittihad and Mason Mount looks destined to join Man Utd this summer.
Along with them, Mateo Kovacic has agreed terms with Manchester City, while Ruben Loftus Cheek, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic are also linked with departures.
So, it’s fair to say the Chelsea squad could look very different next season. But, given the Blues’ performance last term, a squad rebuild is definitely needed.
One of the key areas Pochettino will be looking to improve will be his attack. Last season, Chelsea scored just 38 goals in the Premier League – the sixth-worst record in the division.
Indeed, this played a key role in Chelsea finishing in an abysmal 12th place in the table. This was despite spending ridiculous amounts of money on new players, too.
One new player who the Blues have already signed is Christopher Nkunku. Chelsea announced his arrival on Tuesday and he could play a big role under Pochettino.
Last term, he netted an impressive 16 goals in 25 league appearances for RB Leipzig.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Nkunku and Jackson can help turn Chelsea’s fortunes around. Also, the return of Romelu Lukaku from his loan at Inter Milan could have a positive impact.
