Chelsea set to be stung by double attacker exit; Pochettino facing conundrum over forward options

Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly set to sanction the exit of two attackers this summer as he looks to rebuild his Chelsea squad.

The Blues scored a measly 38 goals last season as they finished in 12th place in the table and Pochettino wants to improve his forward options.

Chelsea have already added Christopher Nkunku to their ranks. The France international netted an impressive 16 league goals for RB Leipzig last term.

Also, Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson is also expected to make the switch to Stamford Bridge this summer. Jackson has already completed his medical, with an official announcement expected soon.

But, as two come in, it now looks like two attacking players could leave Chelsea.

The first is Christian Pulisic. The United States international saw his minutes limited last season and has been deemed surplus to requirements by Pochettino.

According to TuttoMercatoWebAC Milan are ‘closing in’ on signing Pulisic permanently this summer. Interestingly, Ruben Loftus Cheek is also ‘very close’ to joining the Italian club.

As a result, Jackson will have the task of replacing Pulisic and will hopefully contribute more than the American next season.

Fofana ‘close’ to Bundesliga switch

However, as mentioned, it seems Pulisic won’t be the only attacking player to leave Chelsea this summer.

Indeed, according to a report from German outlet BildBlues striker David Datro Fofana could join Bundesliga club Union Berlin on loan.

The 20-year-old signed for Chelsea on a £10.9m move last summer. Since, he has made four appearances for Chelsea after struggling to break into the starting XI.

Now, despite Fofana being tipped to be a top player in the future, it seems he isn’t part of Pochettino’s plans for the coming season.

Therefore, a loan move may be the best thing for his development.

The attention now switches to Pochettino, over who else he will add to his front line this summer. Of course, Nkunku and Jackson will help in that regard. But, you would think that Chelsea need at least one other centre-forward.

Although, Chelsea may have a solution at their disposal already.

Romelu Lukaku has just returned from a loan spell at Inter Milan. And, although the Italian giants are pushing to sign him again, Chelsea may opt to reintegrate him back into the squad.

Last season, the Belgium international scored 14 goals and made seven assists across all competitions for Inter. He also played a key role in them reaching the Champions League final.

So, it will be interesting to see if Pochettino keeps hold of Lukaku for the coming season. If not, he will probably have to sign a new centre-forward in the near future.
