Chelsea set to rival Arsenal for Bundesliga star who would solve Todd Boehly conundrum

Following two hectic transfer windows under Todd Boehly, Chelsea are expected to be busy once again in the summer to improve their squad.

Chelsea have quite the conundrum when it comes to the right-back position as Reece James has been in and out of the squad with injuries.

When fit, James is one of the best full-backs in the league, but he has only started in 13 league matches this season.

As Chelsea are keen on adding depth to each position, it makes sense that they are weighing up a move for an additional right-back.

Arsenal have previously been linked with Bundesliga star Ridle Baku and it would seem as if Chelsea are also interested in his signature.

It has been revealed that Chelsea have previously contacted the Wolfsburg defender and they could rekindle their interest in the summer.

“Ridle Baku of Wolfsburg got the call from Arsenal. The Gunners are interested in the German player who can play right-back and right-wing,” Christian Falk told Caught Offside.

“But they’re not alone in their interest, as Chelsea made a call themselves during the winter window. Villarreal also want to make a bid this summer.”

Baku has scored five goals this season and has also provided one assist. The 25-year-old can operate anywhere down the right flank, but he has predominantly played as a right-back this season.

The German international has been a regular under Niko Kovac and he has featured in all 26 Bundesliga matches this season.

In terms of availability, Baku has played 955 more minutes than James has in the league this season. Along with his injury record to consider, Real Madrid are also reportedly interested in James.

Chelsea expects summer departures

As Boehly is still keen on adding players to the squad, Chelsea are likely to show the door to several stars.

In the Premier League alone they have used 32 players this season, which is considerably more than each of their top six rivals.

Chelsea have lacked a balance to their play this season and their bloated squad has likely contributed to this.

As things stand they sit in the bottom half of the table, having picked up just 39 points so far.

Ben Jacobs recently told TEAMtalk that Chelsea will be looking to cash in on some of the saleable assets they have.

“So outgoings become very important. As a result, you then start looking at where Chelsea can get fees. And that’s why Conor Gallagher, for example, may be a player that departs. Chelsea should be able to get good money for him.

“Outgoings are going to be hugely important for Chelsea. Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic: again players that could leave. So suddenly it creates space and as a result it makes way for the likes of another January signing [Mykhaylo] Mudryk to play more.”
