Christian Pulisic makes firm admission over Chelsea frustration as Liverpool lurk in background

Christian Pulisic has admitted that he wants more game time at Chelsea amid Liverpool monitoring his Stamford Bridge situation closely.

The USA international has had a mixed Blues career so far following his 2019 move from Borussia Dortmund. In fact, his best spell of form at Chelsea remains upon the return from the first coronavirus lockdown, when he directly contributed to eight goals.

Injuries have not helped him either. Indeed, he spent nine of the first 10 Premier League games of the season just gone on the sidelines.

Overall, Pulisic has played in a range of attacking positions but has had to battle with Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi – among others – for game time.

And with his Chelsea contract running out in 2024, a decision is soon due over his future. Speaking in a press conference on international duty, the 23-year-old admitted frustration at his level of game time.

“As far as right now, I’m obviously just focused on what I’m doing here,” he said. “And I’m super excited to be here. And yeah, that’s it.

“Of course, I want to get more playing time. I want to be on the field as much as I can and be the sharpest I can be and fit as well.

“I think I still got a lot of games, but it’s always something that I’m working at and trying to be regular at club level as well to put myself in the best position to be fit when I come here with the national team.”

Chelsea‘s new owners could yet have their own say on Pulisic’s future. The consortium led by Todd Boehly is now in charge at Stamford Bridge and faces a big summer ahead.

Pulisic said of a meeting with the new owners: “At the end of the season, we were able to meet with them and they were around the club a lot.

“They are really good people so I’m excited moving forward.”

As for his long-term future, Pulisic has reportedly emerged on Liverpool’s radar. Manager Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the winger having seen him star for his former club Dortmund.

However, reports earlier this week added that the winger’s current valuation has made a deal very unlikely.

Nevertheless, with Sadio Mane a firm Bayern Munich transfer target this summer, the Reds could soon be in need of a replacement.

In the season just gone, Pulisic made 38 appearances, scoring eight goals and assisting five others.

Chelsea star needs big season

Pulisic is one of several attacking options at Chelsea who boss Thomas Tuchel likes to rotate.

Indeed, unlike Liverpool who almost always field Mohamed Salah and Mane up top, Tuchel likes to regularly interchange Pulisic, Ziyech and Hudson-Odoi out wide.

As a result, Pulisic needs a strong campaign next term to set him up nicely ahead of the final year of his contract.

Thomas Tuchel has a dilemma on his hands with Christian Pulisic, does the USA international need to be sold by Chelsea?

That would up the ante on Chelsea to either hand him a new contract or be ready to sell him.

Pulisic has admitted that he needs more game time and the upcoming season is the perfect chance to try and get it.
