Cody Gakpo transfer latest: Chelsea join race as Arsenal talks reveal minimum fee required

Cody Gakpo, PEC Zwolle v PSV

Chelsea are reportedly the latest club to target a move for promising PSV winger Cody Gakpo this summer, joining Arsenal in the hunt.

Gakpo has been the subject of numerous transfer rumours from various Premier League clubs. Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd have all displayed an interest in his services. Now, Chelsea have also joined the hunt following their takeover with American businessman Todd Boehly.

According to CaughtOffside, PSV have offered their winger to both Chelsea and Arsenal.

However, the London clubs will need to offer over £25m if they want Gakpo in their squads next season.

The 23-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign inside the Eredivisie. Gakpo claimed a combined 25 goal contributions (12 goals, 13 assists) from 27 games inside the Dutch top flight.

His impressive form attracted attention from across Europe, and it seems now that PSV have succumbed to the idea of selling.

Gakpo mainly featured as a left winger for PSV, and has also been used in this position for the Dutch national side on four occasions.

However, it would seem that Mikel Arteta has different plans for the youngster.

Discussions have resulted in Arteta revealing to Gakpo that he may be used as an attacking left-back.

Caught Offside claims that Arteta has enquired about Gakpo’s ability in this position, should he sign for the club.

Arsenal are in need of further back-up for Kieran Tierney, who has been injury-prone since his arrival from Celtic in 2019.

It is also believed that the Gunners are currently leading the race for his signature.

The report adds that Chelsea could also use Gakpo in the same position.

The Blues also need cover for Marcos Alonso, who featured in 28 Premier League games last season for the club.

Gakpo may even be more useful under the Thomas Tuchel regime in this position.

Using a 3-4-2-1 formation, Gakpo would have more opportunity to showcase his attacking ability with Chelsea’s style of play.

Gakpo would also offer more options in the two positions behind the main striker. Normally occupied by Christian Pulisic on the left, Gakpo would provide good competition in this area of the pitch.

With the exit of Romelu Lukaku also being considered, Chelsea will need to recruit in this attacking area.

With youth on his side, Gakpo has already proven to have an eye for goal. Under the right management, he could blossom into a real star in a number of positions inside the Premier League.
