Chelsea consider shock new manager candidate before preparing Mauricio Pochettino offer

Chelsea have added Ange Postecoglou of Celtic to the shortlist of managers who could take over from Frank Lampard as the permanent successor to Graham Potter, it has been revealed.

It has been a turbulent time for Chelsea this season on the touchline. Thomas Tuchel began the campaign as their head coach, but lost his job just after the summer transfer window closed. It prompted the appointment of Graham Potter after his impressive work with Brighton.

Yet Potter could not replicate that positivity at Stamford Bridge. Despite often being protected as a long-term option, Chelsea sacked him after just seven months in charge.

Since then, they have handed the reins back to former boss Frank Lampard for the remainder of the season. However, they are working on the appointment of a new permanent manager.

Julian Nagelsmann had been a prime contender after leaving Bayern Munich to make way for Tuchel. But Nagelsmann is now out of the running.

Many now expect former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to get the Chelsea job. Yet the club are making sure their process is thorough and they are exploring all possible avenues.

According to an update from The Guardian, Chelsea have also included Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou on their shortlist.

The Greek-born Australian tactician has been in charge of Celtic since 2021. He won the Scottish Premiership title at the first time of asking and looks to be on course to retain it.

Furthermore, he has lifted the Scottish League Cup in consecutive seasons for Celtic.

Although he has never managed in one of Europe’s top five leagues, Chelsea are impressed by the way Postecoglou can develop talent.

Pochettino in pole position ahead of Postecoglou

However, Pochettino is still ahead of him in the race to take the reins from Lampard. In fact, he could receive an offer from the Blues soon.

Beyond Pochettino and Postecoglou, other options Chelsea have looked at reportedly include Burnley’s Vincent Kompany and Feyenoord’s Arne Slot.

However, TEAMtalk understands Burnley are preparing a new contract for Kompany after guiding them to promotion back to the Premier League.

It may be inconsequential to Chelsea anyway, since they have been holding several rounds of talks with Pochettino. In turn, the ex-PSG boss is giving ‘serious consideration’ to Chelsea, who already spoke with him before their appointment of Potter in the first place.

Taking over at Chelsea is deemed to be more likely than a return to Tottenham for Pochettino, despite Spurs needing a new head coach as well.
