Cristiano Ronaldo may yet get the chance to stay in the Premier League with Chelsea after a reporter indicated they are back in for him – and that he is “very tempted” by the idea of joining them.
Ronaldo recently brought an end to his controversial second spell with Manchester United. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is now on the lookout for his next venture at club level. Surprisingly, it has been quite hard to generate widespread interest for a player of his calibre.
Some potential suitors might have concerns about Ronaldo’s influence on the overall squad dynamic. Others will merely be wary of how much he might be asking for in terms of a salary.
Whatever the reason, TEAMtalk recently took a look at seven clubs to have distanced themselves from links with Ronaldo.
One of them was Chelsea, who previously tried to tempt him to Stamford Bridge in the summer. At the time, Ronaldo already wanted to leave Man Utd because of their lack of Champions League involvement.
Chelsea could have kept him in UEFA’s top competition. However, their head coach of the time, Thomas Tuchel, was against the idea of incorporating him into his Chelsea squad.
It has since been revealed that former Man Utd interim manager Ralf Rangnick – whom Ronaldo did not see eye to eye with – was among those who advised Tuchel against signing Ronaldo.
Shortly after the transfer window closed in the summer, though, Tuchel lost his job as Chelsea head coach. Graham Potter is now in charge in west London instead.
In the background, there have been rumours that the situation might have changed regarding Ronaldo as a consequence. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly might still want to bring in the former Real Madrid superstar as a marquee signing.
That said, it has looked more likely in recent days that Ronaldo will be leaving the Premier League – and Europe – behind to sign a €200million-per-year (£171.4million) contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
According to Ronaldo’s friend Piers Morgan, though – in information similar to what has already been shared with TEAMtalk – the Portugal international would prefer to be at a Champions League club.
Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea links revived
Could that club be Chelsea after all? An update has followed from Italian journalist Daniele Longo, which puts the Blues back in the picture.
According to the Calciomercato reporter, Chelsea are “there” for Ronaldo – who is “very tempted” by them.
Longo has not provided many more details yet about what Chelsea have planned for Ronaldo. It is unlikely they would be matching the salary offer on the table from Al-Nassr.
But as Morgan has claimed, Ronaldo’s motivation may remain his sporting legacy, rather than money, at this moment in time.
The 37-year-old may have a point to prove that he can still have a positive impact on a top European team. Doing so elsewhere in the Premier League might be the best way to show Man Utd what they are missing.
Chelsea are the only side in the top half of the Premier League to have scored fewer goals than Man Utd in the top flight so far this season. Hence, they might benefit most from his addition if Potter can integrate him into his side.
As a centre-forward, Ronaldo could be a more reliable focal point than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Armando Broja.
After previous claims that Chelsea had shelved their interest, though – even after Tuchel’s exit – it will be interesting to see whether they actually do come up with an offer for him.
