Emerson Palmieri reveals how he would feel about Chelsea return after explaining recall collapse

Emerson Palmieri says he will be “happy” if he gets the chance to return to Chelsea ahead of next season, but is unsure if that will materialise.

Chelsea sent Emerson on loan to Lyon for the 2021-22 season. Therefore, he has not played for his parent club since last August. Yet he still has two years on his contract back at Stamford Bridge.

The highest number of Premier League games he has ever started in a single season was the 13 he managed in 2019-20. In contrast, he started 26 games in Ligue 1 for Lyon in 2021-22.

But Emerson could yet get the chance to return to Chelsea this summer. Fellow left-back Marcos Alonso is reportedly considering his own future – and has openly admitted he would like to play in La Liga.

Alonso told Onda Cero recently: “I have already said that I would like to return to Spain, but in the end it does not depend entirely on me. It’s clear that the desire to one day play in Spain is there.”

If Alonso does indeed leave, Emerson could thus compete with first-choice Ben Chilwell for gametime on the left flank.

In quotes carried by Chelsea’s official website, Emerson has confirmed there has been no contact with Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel. That said, he has made his feelings clear over a potential reintegration.

“I didn’t speak with him Thomas Tuchel just yet,” he said.

“I have a contract with Chelsea. I played there for three seasons and I have a lot of friends there and if I come back, I’ll be happy. It’s a good place and club for me.

“I don’t know [whether I will return], let’s see what can happen.”

Emerson Palmieri looks back at positive season

Emerson can reflect on the season just gone as a positive one. He became more prominent for Lyon and Chelsea even tried to recall him when Chilwell was injured.

Ultimately, the Brazil-born Italy international remained in France for the entire campaign. Regardless, he is glad he got a good amount of gametime under his belt.

Emerson won’t return to Chelsea but may not stay at Lyon

Chelsea left back Emerson will leave this summer but may not stay at Lyon and could move to either Juventus or Lazio

“For me, it was a good season because I played a lot of games,” the 27-year-old said.

“Of course [it felt good that Chelsea wanted him back in January]. Lyon said no, so I didn’t come back. It didn’t depend on me and those conversations were between the clubs.

“Lyon said no and I respected that because when I signed there I signed for one year, not six months. But now I will go back to Chelsea for the pre-season and let’s see what happens in the next month.”

Perhaps Emerson would be worth giving a chance to if Alonso leaves Chelsea this summer.
