Euro Paper Talk: Chelsea knocked back after offering £69m for Milan forward; Pep turned down chance of mouthwatering Man City signing

AC Milan star Rafael Leao

Chelsea were forced to pull out of a deal to sign AC Milan forward Rafael Leao on deadline day after an intervention from Paulo Maldini, while Friday’s Euro Paper Talk claims Manchester City were offered a sensational late window deal that Pep Guardiola turned down.

Chelsea were dealt a significant transfer blow on deadline day when AC Milan blocked their move to sign forward Rafael Leao.

The Blues had been in talks with their Italian counterparts in a bid to thrash out a deal. It’s understood Chelsea offered the reigning Serie A champions £69m for Leao.

Milan had even gone as far as lining up Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli as a potential replacement.

However, Milan technical director Paulo Maldini was not happy with this proposal. The San Siro legend instead demanded that the Blues pay Leao’s £130m release clause in full, as reported in The Times.

That is where Chelsea backed away from the deal and eventually landed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead.

Leao would have been a superb addition to Thomas Tuchel’s squad, having been named Serie A MVP last season. The Portugal international scored 11 goals last term as Milan beat Inter to the Serie A title.

Several targets elude Chelsea on deadline day

The 23-year-old was not the only player Chelsea missed out on signing on deadline day.

The Blues were also keen on midfielders Arsen Zakharyan, Edson Alvarez and midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.

They did, however, bolster Tuchel’s engine room with the addition of Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus.
