Euro Paper Talk: Chelsea despair sees Todd Boehly plot astonishing hijack of Tottenham signing; Newcastle eye ‘dream’ target in double deal
Chelsea are mobilising ahead of a swoop for a player Tottenham are desperate to land, Newcastle want to sign a ‘dream’ target in an exciting double transfer, while Monday’s Euro Paper Talk claims a brilliant Manchester United ace could leave for Atletico Madrid.
BOEHLY’S CHELSEA PLOT STUNNING TOTTENHAM HIJACK
Chelsea have been tipped to usurp London rivals Tottenham in the race for an impressive right-back, amid Graham Potter’s desperate situation as Blues boss.
Chelsea fans had high hopes when Potter joined from Brighton in September, although they did feel like his predecessor Thomas Tuchel had been treated harshly.
Potter had built up a good reputation during his spell on the south coast, getting his team to play great football as they made it into the Premier League’s top 10 last season.
However, Potter is under serious pressure amid Chelsea’s dire form. They have won just once in their last nine league outings. That includes a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa and a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, despite both of those teams being in the bottom half of the table.
To make matters worse for Potter, his side have lost twice to Manchester City in the space of a few days.
On Thursday, they were beaten 1-0 by Pep Guardiola’s team in the league, with Riyad Mahrez bagging a second-half winner.
But things went from bad to worse on Sunday as City eased to a 4-0 victory. Chelsea were completely swept aside and simply had no answer to their opponents.
Chelsea majority owner Todd Boehly will be desperate to help Potter sort things out. And he could sanction some big January signings as a result.
Chelsea, Spurs target enjoying solid year
According to Sports Mole, who cite Portuguese source A Bola, Boehly is preparing to move for one of Tottenham’s biggest transfer targets in a major swoop. The man in question is Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Porro, who is enjoying a great campaign after leaving City in the summer.
Antonio Conte is desperate to take Porro to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as the 23-year-old would solve his right-back problems. Spurs have been firming up their interest in him over the past few days and are willing to meet his £40million release clause.
However, this new report claims Chelsea have ‘set their sights’ on Porro and want to get a deal over the line in the coming weeks.
And Boehly has a good chance of completing an astonishing transfer hijack. He has plenty of money to throw at Sporting, which Spurs will simply not be able to match if it comes to a bidding war.
Conte would be left furious if Porro goes elsewhere, especially as Chelsea are his former club and a close rival of Spurs.
The Italian is keen to improve the Spurs squad with top signings so they can meet his lofty ambitions. But there is now the real possibility of Porro going to Stamford Bridge, which would force Conte to look elsewhere for a new right wing-back.
Chelsea already have Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta in their squad. But with James suffering from injury and Azpilicueta in the final years of his career, a move for Porro makes sense.
And the Spaniard has already registered 10 assists this season, so he could help Potter’s men to find those goals they are desperately lacking.
