Fabrizio Romano has given his information on a new contract for a key Chelsea player after he was linked with a shock transfer to Newcastle.
Chelsea are planning to improve Graham Potter’s squad with several big signings in 2023. They have agreed to capture Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, and the forward has already had his Chelsea medical.
Despite claims Liverpool could hijack the deal, Nkunku’s move to Stamford Bridge is apparently all wrapped up. The Frenchman will cost €60million, which works out at £52.8m currently.
Nkunku could be followed to Chelsea by Borussia Dortmund ace Youssoufa Moukoko. According to the Liverpool Echo, who cite reports in Spain, Chelsea are preparing to rival Liverpool and Manchester United for the striker.
And the 17-year-old goalscorer could be available to Chelsea for a bargain fee. His Dortmund contract expires at the end of the season and he is showing no signs of renewing. As such, Dortmund may have to accept a cut-price Chelsea bid for him this winter.
While senior Blues officials are looking at potential new arrivals, they must also take steps to tie down some of their current players.
Senior stars such as Thiago Silva, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are all out of contract at the end of the campaign, as things stand.
Plus, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will all become free agents in summer 2024 if the club does not act.
Chelsea star a target for English rivals
On Sunday, The Telegraph put Mount in the frame for a shock switch to Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Newcastle.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe is a long-term admirer of the attacking midfielder, going back to his days in charge of Bournemouth. Howe was unsuccessful in landing Mount on loan for the Cherries.
The manager has since kept an eye on Mount’s development and he likes what he sees. There is the possibility of Newcastle launching a surprise raid for the 23-year-old, should Chelsea be unable to organise fresh terms.
With this in mind, transfer specialist Romano has provided an update on the negotiations between Mount and the Blues. During an interview with CaughtOffside, he said: “[There is] some speculation doing the rounds. I’m told there have been talks ongoing for a long time between Mason Mount and Chelsea.
“It’s still not done but it’s under discussion. And for Chelsea it’s seen as an important priority to extend Mount’s deal.
“I know some fans are focusing on him during this run of poor form. But I think they should keep Mount as he’s a big player for them, and still young with the potential to improve.”
Chelsea fans will be glad to hear that the club views Mount’s extension as being a ‘priority’. He is a product of their academy so to see him leave for Newcastle would be heart-breaking.
Admittedly, Mount has struggled in recent weeks, along with most of his Chelsea team-mates. Mount’s last goal contribution in the league was in mid-October.
But the Englishman is still a top player in his own right. And if Potter can get him firing again then he will be integral to Chelsea catching up with the top four.
