Former key Chelsea man offered escape route with Juventus prepared ‘at all costs’ to complete signing

Edouard Mendy, Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea, August 2022

Edouard Mendy will reportedly be able to escape his fringe role at Chelsea, as Juventus are planning to sign him next summer.

Mendy was seen as one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers not too long ago. Indeed, the Senegalese no.1 played consistently for the Blues during his first two seasons.

He played 34 league games last season, and were it not for the African Cup of Nations and an injury, he would likely have played every game.

This season, his role looks very different. He played the first six Premier League games of the campaign, while Thomas Tuchel was still the manager.

However, Kepa Arrizabalaga has been preferred since Graham Potter has been at the helm.

Mendy has started the last two league games, as well as playing in the Blues’ final Champions League group game. Those outings were offered to him as a result of an injury to Kepa.

He might well be able to play himself back into the side. However, losses in both Premier League games he has started of late might not bode well.

It remains to be seen what will happen when Kepa returns to the fold.

Mendy offered escape route

Should Mendy not be able to fight his way back to the starting spot, a move away from Chelsea might be the best course of action.

He has apparently been offered to Tottenham already. If those reports are accurate, it would seem the Blues are happy enough in letting him leave.

Another side has now entered the fold to take him on board, too.

Tutto Juve reports that Juventus are keen on taking Mendy on board. That report states that Juve has ‘focussed on next summer’ to build a squad that will allow them to ‘fight for all titles’.

It also suggests the goalkeeper is one of the top priorities for the summer window. That is despite Wojciech Szczesny – who is under contract at Juve until the summer of 2024 – being in stellar form at the moment, at least for Poland.

The Bianconeri will reportedly attempt to strengthen the keeper position ‘at all costs’ next summer.

With that being said, they will likely be willing to spend a decent sum of money on Mendy. That means Chelsea could get a player off the books that is hardly playing, and still earn a good fee for him.

Furthermore, recent reports have stated the Blues are keen on bringing in a world-class goalkeeper to become the starter.

If they make a good sum from Mendy, they could be well placed to do so, and still be able to improve in other areas too.
